I'm still chasing a DPF back-pressure problem, and as part of the investigation I took the DPF out. I saw that the internal seal somewhere had blown and soot was leaking out. Cleaning isn't going to fix that... so OP, depends what the problem is. Btw, I'm on 142k miles.
