I agree. Here's the crazy thing...Bama was essentially given the opportunity to sit out championship week and let others wear each other out for one more week. And then they were given the benefit of driving 2 hours to New Orleans instead of to California.

It's akin to having the #1 overall seed in the NCCA basketball tournament, when in reality they were a toss up with Ohio State for the final spot. But that's just how it works with the current system which is imperfect when you consider teams that sat out championship week.

In fact, I would say conference championships actually overall hurt teams chances as of recent than it helped. The only situation I recall in CFP era where the conference champ game mattered and got a team in was 2014 Ohio State team that needed the game to jump TCU and Baylor.


In any case, I firmly don't believe the playoffs need any expansions to 6 or 8 teams. You have to make every game count in college football. Back in the BCS era, some years, you couldn't afford to even lose a single game. Today, you can actually lose 1 game and still be in. That's perfect IMO.
