About sums it up really - the top petrol (excluding M cars) and diesel engined 3/4 series are about the same in terms of straightline performance up to around the legal limit... so do you want diesel noise and economy or petrol noise and economy?

I will leave aside debates about xdrive, as totally aware that you an have a 335/435 as an sdrive whereas you cannot with the diesel ones.

Also, the petrol engined cars have less weight over the nose so likely handle a bit better too.

I'd throw the Manual vs Auto Tranny into the equation, another reason for my change, want a manual again. Disclaimer I've not watched the vid as I'm at work.

I wonder if they used launch control? You'd imagine the 335d would be slightly ahead in that case as it can get off the mark better.

But really, there seems nothing in it.
Although, the cars should be like for like ie 435i vs 435d if you are going to compare models in this way. The touring is 65kg heavier than a 4 series!

They were both xdrive cars so getting good starts in both should be easy.

I'd like a manual too... but only about 10% of the time, when just driving an A-road for fun. Rest of the time in traffic and on motorway it's a chore.. Afraid it's always the auto for me, as long as the paddles work well.

Otherwise I think I'd just have an E46 M3!

Same here, test drove a C63 AMG and the paddles were pathetic!

335d for me everytime, masses of torque plus good fuel economy, have done 1400 miles averaging 42 mpg, trouble is find it very easy to get to triple figures!.

Yes that is major problem (IMO) with auto diesels, lots of power torque, low revs and before you know it you are up in the triples.

Same likely holds true for petrol but here you are being soothed and mesmerised by the sweet sounds from exhaust.

The no drama approach of these is epic and makes me grin, I have the speed gong set at 85 but normally by the time it goes off and I look I'm in triple digits

Just goes to show you the diesel is the quicker engine. Now if only the tractor soundtrack could be fixed like the SQ5!!

Each to their own...

For me it's the no drama of a diesel that I dislike (well one of the things)...no grin factor. My 330D was effortlessly fast but bored me to tears, there was no sense of occasion. It went from A to B quickly, cheaply and with little fuss but I never once looked at it and thought: "Yes, I want to go for a drive in that just for the pleasure of driving it", any more than I ever got the urge to use the washing machine just for the hell of it even though it was hugely effective at cleaning my clothes. It was a white good.

Nope. The Diesel is the quicker car 0-60 (just). The engine is definitely not (revs)

Tbh if you want a sense of occasion take a 640d gran coupe out for a spin, stops traffic for all the right reasons.

Oh piss off. It's a thread distinctly about 35i vs 35d. You don't have to join in. I don't join in on all the threads about shit that bores me.

Yeah they do have a certain...presence! Massive motorway cruiser in the shape of a coupe...uber luxo-barge. Wrong sort of occasion for my taste

It's not really.. If diesels don't do it for you then I don't think the 335d would make any difference! It's not the speed per se that's the issue, but the noise, responsiveness and general character
