So, I've had my 2013 X6M almost 10 months now... I really like the vehicle but there appears to be one really bonehead design element (or lack there of)...
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it simply incredulous that a vehicle of this pedigree would not automatically switch between day and night modes wrt to the Nav/Map display? Sure you CAN switch it by hand, but wtf? Even the very cheapest Nav systems switch between day and night modes based on Time of Day, local calculated sunrise/sunset, the auto headlight sensors, or whether the headlights are simply on or off... It seems really senseless (pun intended) to have to manually switch off the glaring daytime map display when running the vehicle at night. This all works automatically in my M6, so whats up with this in the X6M? I'm wondering if this stupidity can be resolved with a firmware or nav system update... As I'm sure someone will likely come up with some carefully fabricated reason why manual switching is the far superior method, at least BMW should give us the option to enable auto-switching... |

I agree. I now leave it in night mode so I don't fumble with it.
Annoying. I have both Mercs and this X6. I wonder what some of these guys were thinking. My Acura (2010 ZDX) has far better technology integration, although not as much grin factor! |

Totally agree, has been a pet peeve of mine for yrs. Didn't do it automatically on my '11 and doesn't do it on my '13.
I programmed one of the programmable buttons just for this. I recently had a X3 as a loaner and it had an "Auto" option. You would think this would be a simple software update... |

Even my (gulp) chevy does this...
So we all know cars that auto-switch. I think a better question might be does anyone know another car brand that DOESN'T? |

Sometimes even when it is bright outside (maybe 4-5PM), the headlights would stay on... I now just use the light switch manually. Most things about this car can be automatic but they aren't. Even my dad's Camry can do better. |

Well, at least there ***IS*** an auto headlight switch!
(BTW - I believe the auto lights may come on if the sun is low on the horizon - not just in darkness. This may be by design.) |

How did you save that? I saved a button with night mode on and now all saved buttons have night mode on. How do you switch back to day mode?

Pick the day/night mode and save it in one of the programmable memory button. And pressing the memory button will switch between mode each time. |

I just got a call yesterday that my 2013 X6M has some Nav recall/update that needs to be done. I will bring the car in on Monday, and update as to what is changed. Does anybody know what this is?
Cheers, |

Hey Luca!
I haven't got any notifications yet. I did press BMW pretty hard through other channels about this major FAIL in their Nav system, but I really don't expect it possible that they could have, or would have, done anything this quickly. If you bring your car in, please get the details and pass it on! |

I just checked my car (2013 X5M) and the screen does dim. And I'm pretty sure our cars are like 95% the same components. The amount change between day and night mode is proportional to the brightness setting.
If you have it on full brightness, it will barely dim from day to night mode. If you have it on the lowest brightness, the screen almost turns off when going from day to night (still visible during the day in day mode) I'm not sure if this was already known and you guys are talking about something different but I'm just sharing what I found.
