Rearview camera question

Hey guys I have a question about a rear view camera.

I have a 2011 x5 that is having a flickering issue periodically with the rear view camera. The dealer says it needs to be replaced.

I pulled the rear panel and it is very easy to get to the camera and they are fairly easy to come by. The question is would it be a direct replacement or is there coding that's needed? Of course the dealer wants $800 for the job and the camera is around $300.

Any help is appreciated!

Is your 2011 a early 2010 build date? Otherwise it would be covered under warranty. my 2012 was built in late march 2011so that is the only reason why I ask.

Yea, sorry should have included that. Early 2010 build. I figured that would be the best route to go was do it myself. I guess the bigger question can it be coded by someone other than the dealer, like a vendor from one of these sites? Or os there more advanced things that had to be done by a tech.

My guess is that the output of the camera is probably one of the industry standards (you'd want to match the resoultion), but the field of view for the camera would also need to be the same for an aftermarket unit to work properly. You may also find the low-light visibility may be different, giving you an unusable image at night on some.

I found an oem camera that seems readily available online. I would go that route rather than trying to retrofit an aftermarket camera assuming the camera is the problem here.

I also have a 2011 and it started doing it a few days ago. Not in the morning but in the afternoon if the weather is hot. Off to the dealership when i get some time.

If you replace it with another BMW OEM camera you shouldnt need any coding.

It has been cooler this week and no problems. I have searched and others have had problems when the weather has been hot. Hot or cold i should not have any problems. I will post when i get to the dealership. Thanks
