Rear end cover leaking.....Need a solid advice

my 2000 X5 4.4 with 245k has a drip on the rear end. No spots under the car, just normal leak from the cover only, not the axles seals. I want to repair the cover seal/silicone. Is it a big of a job? I see a drain plug on the top part of the differential. Is this what I need to remove to check how much fluid there is?
