Purchasing the X5, torn between the v6 and v8!??!

Hey Guys-

I have learned a ton from this forum over the past month while researching my new purchase. It's come time for me to trade in my 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. As much as I LOVE this beast, practicality (baby on the way) and the wife have won the battle.

I live in NYC and due to my location I really only drive on the weekend, not even ALL weekends at that, hence the decision not to drop the extra cash on a 2012. With that said, I am looking at 2 different CPO 2009 x5's with 20k miles on both. Both are virtually loaded and the main difference is between the 3.0 and 4.8.

Just wanted to hear from other owners on the real life pro's and con's. I put down a deposit on the 3.0 but now and wondering if I will regret sacrificing power to leverage a (slightly) better MPG.... Especially coming off a 500hp vehicle (420hp stock, i have some mods).

Any help, comments, feedback is welcome!

Thanks in advance!!

i have had 2009 v8 for last 3 years and 3 years before that and I just put in order for my 2013 to be built this week. is no brainer to go with the v8. the power, handling, is something else. And the comfort is actually very nice even with sport package with the 20s on it. I also have the 3rd row best thing i have done on this vehicle. to be honest i dont even think about the gas milage anymore. and really is not that bad if you have had anything with big power engines in the past. By the way my wife drives this most of time and she will even tell you that she would never drive anything else with less power than this anymore.

V8! I picked up mine last weekend. I tried the 6 and the D and they were both boring!

First, for the BMW newbies, its an i6, not a v6. I've had both but given the 30i I had in an X3, I'd want more power for the extra weight of the X5.
If you can aford a newer model, the 35i is the best of both worlds, v8 power with the i6 economy. Plus the you get updated styling and features of the '11 & up models. The 8 speed auto is a big plus.

I came from a sierra Denali that after mods was pushing 500hp. I tried the i6 and couldn't do it. The fuel economy difference isn't huge and you'll love the 4.8. If you get the 3.0 within a week you'll be wishing you had gotten the 4.8.

Unless the 3rd row is the reason, you are not gaining much in terms of room.
That said... get the V8. I came out of an E55 AMG (516 HP...yes, some mods) and the 4.8 is just barely adequate. I spent a few days with a 3.0...nice ride, but no where near what I like in terms of power. YMMV.

So, with all of the feedback above and listening to my gut, we just purchased a 2009 CPO 4.8i, Black Saphire/Tobacco, Premium package, Sport package, technology package, rear climate, cold weather, premium sound (w/nav, can't remember if it is a given with these options) including the 20" Y-spokes that I love....

We contemplated going with a 2012, or waiting for a 2013 but at the end of the day we only drive on the weekends at most living in NYC and paying for parking is a kick in the ass enough before adding cost of depreciation. Overall VERY happy with the purchase!

Will post some pics later this weekend, actually drove it home today as it was ready to roll. Absolutely a bit less raw power but much better handling than our GC SRT8. Have had other performance oriented cars in the past, S4, FX45, this X5 was quite impressive in terms of comfort and handling. Very pleased with our choice!!!

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback!

Congrats. Sounds like we have the same car but mine has sand beige interior. It does lack some of the power I was used to but it is way more fun to drive.

Talking

Nice first road trip from Manhattan up to the catskills today and I am already addicted to the handling of this machine when compared to my SRT8. Best handling SUV/SAV on the road IMO. First time ever where my wife was arguing over who would drive and we certainly have had some fun vehicles in the past as well. Almost more fun than riding my HD Fat Bob in some ways! haha. Atleast I got to bring the dog (2yo Cane Corso) along....

Curious what other 4.8i owners are seeing for real life MPG, city, highway and combined? Also, what practical mods do other owners find to be worth the time and effort?

Hahaha. I have a fat bob too and ya, this is almost more fun!
I live in upstate NY and drive ALOT of hills. I'm averaging 16. Not great but definitely better than the 12 I was getting in my Denali.

I drive mine on weekends too, and mostly around town. I'm getting 13. I've seen 19, but that was all hwy, and I was trying.
I miss the overall power of the E55, however, the handling and towing capabilities pushed me in this direction. With the suspension in sport mode, you have no idea you are driving a vehicle that weighs over 5000#.

I'm not sure why, but I've also noticed that with the sport button pressed, mine has adaptive drive, I get better fuel economy too. I'm not sure if the suspension stiffening also lowers the vehicle slightly making it more aerodynamic, but I have noticed gains.

Get an X5 M. I once had a 2007 SRT8. And it was a blast. I now drive a 2010 X5m and my wife has a 2011 X5 3.5..

Her truck can't even get out of its own way! I could never drive it as a daily driver. 300 hp is not enough.

Get the M!

I have a 2007 X5 4.8i and it's a blast but oh so thirsty. So if the cost of gasoline is a factor for you and power is not an issue then I suggest you go with the 3.0L engine X5.

I have absolutely NO regrets after going with the v8. In the end I knew I would anyway and quite glad I did. When (if) I move out of NYC into the burbs I will contemplate the M but for now I am beyond content with this vehicle in every single way. Hardly miss my SRT8 at all....
