Iphone integration and adapters

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a X6 5.0 which should be built in 3 weeks, to replace my 2011 335i convertible and 2006 Range Rover Sport. I had originally planned on getting an X6 5 months ago, but unfortunately fell in love with the idea of having a convertible as well as my RRS. Well The 335i sits in the garage and being on the road 24 days a month i find myself driving the RRS all the time - not what I intended.

Anyhow, I ordered the tech, premium, cold and sport activity package forgoing the sport package and active steering, neither of which I liked for the driving I do. I also added the 20" wheels and the performance aero kit to be color coded to my metallic Black Sapphire car with matching grills.

I also ordered the iPhone adapter/app kit and it suggests that you need the bmw assist system with blue tooth wireless integration etc, My 335i integrated my iPhone through usb for phone/music use but could not use bmw apps because it was missing something. I cannot see any options or accessories for this beyond the adapter/app kit in my already placed order. Am I missing something.

I'm also thinking of adding the bmw performance flash for the extra 43bhp - worth it or not considering I concentrated on tech rather than performance in the options I added. I'm just looking for a bit extra in overtaking/acceleration.

Thanks in advance.

After digging around at the dealer they determined that the BMW apps accessory/option included the smart phone system integration - options are 6NF and 6NR. The standard car provides a USB port which connects the music and phone through the car but if you want full integration including the use of the apps, etc you must have that option installed at order time. You wonder why it isn't standard.

Yes, make sure you get BMW Apps option. Then you will need the snap in adapter for your specific iPhone. If you have a 3G/3Gs I am going to be selling mine when my 4Gs arrives and I have to pony up for a new snap in adapter.

MAKE SURE you get the snap in adapter for BMW apps (if you have that option, which you should get as it is only $250).

BTW, what color is your 335?

iphone adapters

I'll be plugging in the jailbroken iPhone 4 until they have an untethered jailbreak for the 4s and will have an adapter to suit. I ordered the $250 option which should have both.

My 335i is black and I've been driving it for the past couple days here in NC whilst the sun still shines and I still have it !

Nice looking car! Love the black grille.

To be clear, even with BMW apps, you still need to purchase the correct snap in adapter. Here is the link to the BMW website that shows it (I can't seem to select the part number very easily)

Thanks doug_999. I ordered that and I'm surprised that the dealer didn't say anything ?

For others here is the pn.
PN 84212218390 BMW Apple iPhone 4 Snap In Adapter

Note that original iPhone, 3g/3gs are different part numbers to the iPhone 4. $263 and change is what I paid inc. tax and economy shipping.

What additional features/options adapter gives you?
I have regular white cable and able to use BMW apps, like web radio, pandora, etc

Good question - looks like you need the snap in adapter to
1. Use the shark fin antenna for better reception
2. Charge the iPhone (I think)
3. Video Playback
4. Plug in features*

*PlugIn – changes the iDrive screen to the same look and feel as the iPod function on an iPhone. It allows you to take advantage of all the iPod features (Genius, album art, compiling playlists, etc) that are not available via the basic USB connection. With future iPhone software updates, new features will also be available in the car. An additional benefit comes in the way of increased interface speed.

1 and 3 might actually worth getting it
As for num 2, - regular white cable charges the phone as well

Can you use adapter without removing phone from case?
Any sound quality difference?

P.S. Is video playback available only when parked, just like DVD playback?

Alas no, you have to remove the phone from the case (I've never had one because of this and yes, sometimes that scares the crap out of me). Sound quality should be the exact same and if you have AT&T the external antenna really helps (I can't use my phone without the snap in adapter where I live). I would also say that it is quicker to put into the car and remove with the adapter - provided you remember to open the storage compartment and remove it when you get out of the car

And yes, here in the US at least, video playback only when parked.

This is very helpfull
Thank you

Removing case is a kind of PITA
It also sucks that i might have to replace adapter when iPhone 5 comes out, if it's different
That's another $300 flushed down the toilet

if you go to bmw coding you will see that they have coded the DVD in motion. Some other neat mods on there as well. I would never watch anything whilst driving though
