Help with Glovebox issue

Hey fellas,
im pretty natural on forums so i did indeed use the search but no luck. I do not own a X5 but my buddy does(a 2010? i believe). Im just trying to help him out in the meantime as he cannot get online at the time. Problem is the glovebox will not open. We took it to the stealership and they said it caused a power surge due to the LED lights we put in to replace the halogen ones. Everything on the rig is working.i call bullshit but im not too familiar with the BMW setup. im thinking it might have blown a fuse, and if so where and what fuse should he replace?

any help will be appreciated!

Dave.

Does your friend have a manual?

The fuse boxes are located at the front passenger side by the foot well and in the cargo area. There is an insert by the fuse box in the cargo area with a list of the fuses.

You can also open the glove box manually by opening the cover located directly to the right of the glove box and pulling a latch. You have to open the front passenger door to see it.

bummppppp..... ok

so we had some trouble locating which picture was the glovebox. We figured it should be the 4-5th one down with a black rectangular box. My question is:

there are 6-7 numbers next to it. How do i know which one to replace?

On mine, there are just 1 fuse for an application. This one is throwing me off.

I just tried changing my glove box LED and it looks like i might have also blown a fuse since the all i here when I push the glove box button is a click. The glovebox will not open. Do you remember which fuse it was? Thanks!

Yeah, all resolved.. Underneath your passenger footwell where the dash is you'll find the fuse box. You just need to replace the blown fuse for the glove box there..

I didn't even realized the glove box was powered, and that a blown fuse could affect entrance to the glove box. So odd!

After putting the regular bulb back in, did anyone else need to upgrade the fuse to 20 or 25? Mine popped again with both 10 and 15.

The glove box fuse keeps blowing because the LED creates a short between the metal prongs (of the light housing) which contacts the metal of housing bracket itself. The simple solution is this.... put electrical tape on the metal bracket housing so there is no contact with the metal prongs from the plastic light housing.

Here are some pics of what I mean.

These are the metal prongs that make contact with the metal housing bracket

Here is the metal bracket, I place electrical tape at the contact points where the prongs would make contact.

next insert your led

presto, now your glove box is led status

No need to mess around with fuses of different amperages.

Great Info everyone, I haven't attempted the bulb replacement. However, when I do I'll be much more confident in the execution.
Thanks for sharing.
