Next generation X3 also in the cold weather testing cycle

Joining its brethern (the 3-series and 1-series) the next generation X3 has also been caught starting its cold weather testing cycle. It seems X3 development has been slowed down a little (because of the success of the X1 as some rumors have it). As you may remember this X3 has been under development for quite a long time now, far longer then the next 1-Series and 3-Series.

The only thing I can think of is that they slowed development to avoid what happened to the previous X3 (i.e. having the look and technology be very dated compared to the 3-series).

I believe I read somewhere that BMW was intent on having technology from the F30 3-series in the new X3 rather than relying on E90 technology and having the car be dated (the current X3 is still running on an E46 platform).

Interesting.

I was thinking the same thing. Its not wide enough. If the front was shorter then it might of worked but its long.

Something doesn't look right to my eyes... I agree with other people.. like front is too low, and the top is too high.. like a weird hunchback

I think the camo must be causing the perception. It is amazing what one weird line can do to throw off your perception. For example, look how the camo goes up and forward at the B-pillar. This probably makes the rear look saggy and the car taller than it is.

I think that the new X1 now takes the SAV role of adopting current/recent past 3 series technology to extend the life of parts/platforms/technology. The X1 is based on the e91 from what I understand and the new X3 will be "current" know-how (or I guess that's "future" know-how from today... that was confusing. sorry.)

My guess 3 guesses on the delay:
1. They went back to the drawing board after going down a design path they no longer like
2. They were waiting for 1 and 3 series development to catch up to concurrently design shared parts/platform/technology
3. Something they were depending on for development took a lot longer than planned and is now ready (new 8 speed transmission, new electronics architecture... whatever)

One thing is for certain, nobody can accuse this test-mule of having small side mirrors.

You can make out the traditional X3 ear window if you look really close. I am sure that they added a rib to the rear tailigate to make the rear look more pushed out.

As for the wheels/tires, it is in winter trim so that means more sidewall and less width. Summer will have nice wide ones with no sidewalls, don't worry.

I like it and the mirrors don't bother me. All Euro cars are going to have large ones soon due to their new regulations.

This is all old boring stuff.

The reason it is taking so long is they cannot fix/find a solid A/T.

This new X-Car will be the first new car based on the all new 3er that is coming to market...

They pushed back production on the X3 only to get production times sorted out.

Plus they moved production to the USA and had to retool the old Z4 production area.
