Mesh Grill Replacement

I am replacing the lower mesh grills. With the sport package, they are grey. I want to go all black so that they match the mesh around the cornering lights.

I got them in today and replacing the top was easy. Just pushed down the top tabs and pulled the piece out. The new one snapped right in.

I can't figure out the lower one. I can't seem to reach it and it appears wedged in. I tried removing the front skid plate, still no access. I also tried removing the lower part of the front bumper but am not sure of all the connection points and don't want to mess anything up. I can't get my hand down that far from above. I have a few pics below. Any ideas?

After a long afternoon I got this replaced. If you are going to try this, you need to remove the bottom part of the lower bumper (textured part, not painted). There are tabs in the painted bumper that need to be slid out from the lower portion and it takes some careful forcing to make it happen. Removes the screws from the wheel well and then carefully slide each one out (work on two or three at a time for leverage). Once removed, unplug the sensors and wiring then the grill removal isn't too bad.

The new grill is easy to install once everything is free from the car. Getting the lower portion back on was even more difficult! I love the look but set aside a full morning or afternoon.

Not sure I would go through the work again.

Where did you get the black mesh? I need to do this to mine as well as I already have the black grill.

Here are the part numbers:
Top Mesh 51 11 7 159 597
Bottom Mesh 51 11 7 176 282

Schwartz is the color (Black)

Here is the parts page for reference:

You can't see the grey in the first picture well but I really like the result.

I unscrewed all the screws from black textured part (#2) but was not able to get this loose. There must be additional steps involved, maybe i have to take to body shop to get done or wait until someone does it and posts pictures.

Think of it this way: You did us a favor by changing it bc that's one cool looking X6! The aesthetic side of our brains thanks you for your efforts.

Do you know if there is a difference between your 2 piece grill and the matte one?
I am planning on replacing mine with a black one but don't know if I should get the one from the dealer or find a matte black one.

I think they are all two pice. The slats fit into the trim ring, then the trim ring attaches to the hood (so you can mx and match gray, chrome and black). Maybe the aftermarkets are one piece but I know all the options at the dealer are two peice.

So are those black mesh grills an original BMW part?

Do you have the part #'s for them?

Thanks!

Awesome!!!! I can't wait for mine to come in. I'm looking to do the same thing. Do you know if the molding around the fog lights come in the same finish?

They did not when I did my changes a year ago. Unless something changed, I don't think so. Some guys bought new and had them painted.

Thanks for the part#'s I guess I should read more closely next time, I would have seen them in the earlier posts.

Just called Parts at my local dealer and got both grills on order.

Thanks!

You didn't have to remove any pieces of the bumper!!! All you had to do is just pull the mesh out by pulling it from one side, inch by inch; to the other side. The mesh will come out same way as the top one. Then you just snap new one in.

I had a question about how you took out the lower mesh. Did you push the grille in and then pull it to the side, or did you pull the grille out and pull it to the side.

If they ordered the wrong ones, it is their fault. Don't except them!

As for replacing, that was two years ago let me think. I believe I pushed it in.
