Thumbs up BMW X1 confirmed for the U.S.!

Up until now there had been no word that the X1 would be made available here in the U.S. However, BMW has just confirmed that it will be coming stateside!

Quote:
THE BMW X1 CONFIRMED FOR UNITED STATES IN 2011.
02.07.2009

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey – July 1, 2009 … It was confirmed today that the BMW X1 is planned to debut in the United States in calendar year 2011. The X1 has been conceived with the flexibility to offer traditional rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations, as well as a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices. In light of rapidly evolving US market demands, fuel prices, and regulatory standards, elements of the X1’s US launch plan, including engine and drivetrain configurations, will be forthcoming closer to the time of launch.

The BMW X1 will debut in Europe this fall with a choice of four engines - one gasoline and three diesels - and will be available in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations. The X1 will set new benchmarks in the premium compact segment for efficiency, comfort, utility, and of course driving dynamics. Achieving up to 5.2 L/100km (45.2 miles per US gallon) on the European test cycle, the BMW Advanced Diesel-powered X1 sDrive18d will provide remarkable fuel efficiency while still achieving a top speed of 200km/h (124mph). Each drivetrain choice for the X1 will showcase the latest results of BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering strategy, which is focused to reduce emissions and consumption while enhancing the performance expected of any BMW.

Why such a mind numbing delay? dont they take the US market seriously? Its not going to be a 2011 car in 2010 its going to debut in the YEAR of 2011 which means TWO YEARS from now. I will have lost any interest i may have had at that point.

well...compared to 1 series, 2yr delay isn't so bad now is it?

It takes time for a new vehicle to be tested and certified for the US market. the most recent Pontiac GTO didn't have hood scoops in its first year of production because they hadn't been approved by the appropriate crash-testing body.

additionally, this gives Europe the ability to test out any bugs that may be in the system, before it shows up on our shores. which is a good thing.

Isn't all X's being built in the U.S. with the exception of the current X3?

no, they aren't. the X1's are being built in Germany, while the current X3's are built in Graz, Austria by Magna. the next-gen X3 is moving to the South Carolina plant, which was just expanded.

Because they don't want potential customers for the new X3 to buy the X1 instead. So they delay X1 availability in the US until the new X3 is out.

I really hope it comes with the N54 as an engine choice in the US. This car is going to go head to head with the 300hp Infiniti EX35. X1 with N54 to me is the do it all little SUV. WOuld be perfect for me as someone who wants a smallish SUV with more car-like handling and room for 2 dogs and music equipment when needed.

By 2011, Audi Q3 will be out.

Small premium SUVs occupy a small niche market, and the small pie created by X3 is increasingly being slided by MB GLK, Audi Q5, Acura RDX, Infiniti EX, and Volve XC60. Well the pie may be getting bigger because of the economic crisis, but not at the same rate as new products are introduced.

Since MY 2011 X3 will show up in 2010 in the U.S., by staggering the product release BMW will get more interest from the public for the MY 2012 models.

I'm pretty sure a turbo will be available, and hopefully 6MT will be too.
