X5 35d performance...WTF?
Is there nothing available? All I've found is the JBD and something called Renn Tech? I would really like to give my 35d some more power... but I'm coming up empty all the time. Exhaust, downpipe nothing?

try Malone Tuning. Very well known person amongst TDI and other diesel communities.
I've heard nothing but good things about him. He claims big numbers on the X5 diesel. He claims 310-340 horsepower, and 515 lb foot of torque. http://malonetuning.com/ |

Yep, I have the ESS chip included when I bought the X5 35d, but haven't taken it out to notice the difference vs stock. I'll post some reviews once I take it out for a ride.

JBD gives 60hp and 100 ft lbs of torque. $329 with OBDII code reader/can tool.
So thats 325hp and 525ft lbs of torque for $279 basic or $329 to be able to read and clear codes too. |

I contacted ESS and they reiterated what their website says, that their ECU flash is not compatible with US Spec BMW diesels. How did you guys get one?

What about the Renn TEch one? Also who is running the JBD and is it really worth it? What about exhaust options?

You got PM. I'll be flashing mine with RennTech in March, till then I run JBD@100% very solid tune! In regards to other parts the only thing I have is the K&N drop in filter, nothing else is available for the US-spec X5Ds.

How is it with the JBD and the K&N? I've had the K&N since the week I bought it and haven't installed it.

Haven't noticed much from the filter. Just changing the stock one makes me feel good, it's incredibly restrictive. I wonder how it sucks air through that thing. Most noticeable is the tune out of two. Very hard to notice little changes on this heavy behemoth, you have to approach drastically.

I test drove an X5M yesterday at a dealer, it's an amazing beast, but at about only 10 mpg (if you drive it like an M car should be driven) the cost of ownership would not be fun.
After the test drive I asked to test drive an X5 35d, and I gotta tell you I was damm impressed with the power and torque on it, and this is coming right after testing an X5M. Honestly, I thought just stock the X5 35d had great torque! Now if only BMWNA would bring the X5 M50d to the States, I think I would have my perfect car - M power and performance coupled with diesel gas mileage . |

VASTYLE, let us know how te Renntech tune goes. From everything I've heard, his is an excellent option as long as you don't mind the price tag.
I wouldn't worry about exhaust, etc. until you've exhausted the ECM options. Because of the way our (I drive a 335d) exhaust systems are laid out--DPF, urea injection, etc.--you would have to go completely custom (as of today) and may very well have to bypass the emissions equipment to see any worth-while gains. There are muffler options, but these really don't seem to be the restriction on our Diesel systems, and even removing the mufflers (only) all-together won't give you the significantly louder exhaust note you may expect(if your going for sound). Some have replaced the piping from the DPF back with custom mandrel-bent for fewer turns & crimps and gone with resonators instead of mufflers. They state they can feel more exhaust (as in the hand by the exhaust pipe method) but noted that the sound change was negligable and have not mentioned any performance gains. There's a place in Elkridge, MD with some experience if you want to go this route Keeping an eye on the e90 diesel forums may be a good idea. Last edited by FormerRotor; 02-26-2012 at 08:03 AM.. |

That 3.5d is way detuned. An ECU tuning will boost the engine! I wish I bought a diesel.
the torque is a monster. Several tuners can do up to 75 HP of gains just with a ECU remapping. |

to me ECU remap > Power box aka JB. Power box = faking parameters/values. ECU tune = real parameters/values. |

there are plenty of resources on google. Look BMW diesel tuning. I have my X5 4.8i (non-diesel) with ECU tuned by ECU PROGRAM www.ecuprogram.com. |
