Band Aid Smell (A/C Freon Leak)

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to post a Thread for others who may have or eventually develop a Freon leak. A month ago, I started smelling a Band-Aid scent when immediately starting the car. The smell would go away after a minute or two. I did a search on other forums and discovered it might be a problem with the A/C. Brought it in, and sure enough, it was a Freon leak ("evaporator leaking") resulting in the smell. My A/C was never compromised and always was blowing cold. Easy fix, right? Well unfortunately, they needed to remove the entire dash and center console (I have the rear climate package) and had it for 3 days. Picked it up yesterday and the smell is gone and so far no new rattles from preforming surgery. Only issue is a bunch of new swirl marks above the front wheel wells and a small starch on my interior wood trim. I don't understand why the service guys do not use an exterior protective covering for the paint when working in the engine bay to prevent marring? I'm anal, so most people wouldn't even notice the swirls. The trim scratch is collateral damage I guess due to the extent of the job. Honestly, I have a great rapport with the service guys at my dealer and they always treat me well so it's not really worth complaining. Although I do plan to point it out when I delivery my annual holiday donut run for the guys!!! I just hate when stupid things happen at the result of someone else. Had I marred up the paint or scratched the wood, I would blame myself and get over it. I guess I will in time.

Attached is a copy of the invoice if anyone was interested in the part #s.

Also, I saw in a recent post another member inquiring about another Diesel Campaign for the EGR bracket. I was unaware of it as well until yesterday

Good info, thanks. When we took our third car in for service recently (not a BMW), it also came back with the fender marred to hell. Buffed out easily, but still a waste of 30 minutes for me when the mechanics could just have been careful.

There is an odd (not fresh) smell also coming out of my A/C when it first turns on, but I tend to blame it on the fact that I never run the A/C, so it's the stale are leaving the system. Is that what you were experiencing also?

No, what I was smelling was the exact scent you get from Band-Aid brand band aids.

I can't tell from the invoice, but was this still under warranty for you? If not what was the cost? Thanks

Thankfully yes! 3 days in the shop. If I decide to keep my E70 past Fall 2014, it won't be without a BMW extended warranty.
