x5 blower works - no air through vents

I have a 2002 3.0 X5. When we first start the car, the hvac unit works great(air blows through the vents you want, any speed you want), then after we have run the interstate for over 1 hour, we notice the air starting to slow down out of the vents. Even when we press the max button, we hear the fan blowing as fast as it can, however it will not come out of any locations. The buttons show the change in directions, we can hear the fan running, but no outlet for the air. We have replaced 3 different resistors but nothing corrects this. We can then let it cool down for 30 min or more and it works fine for about 15 min and then starts to close the doors to the vents. Any Ideas?

Sounds like too little or too much freon. That can cause it to ice over and it sounds like what you're experiencing.

I have a 2002 x5 3.0 and have been experiencing the exact problem you mention. Did you resolve it and what was the fix?

It was the thermo coupler located under the dash( for the air conditioner). It was telling the computer that the air was not cold enough, so it continued cooling until it froze. After we turned the air off, it would thaw, work for a little, then freeze again. The part was cheap, the labor to remove the dash is where it hurts.
