idrive screen backlight problem
ok so this has happened a couple times before but a simple reset (two eject buttons + on/off button) got things back to normal. guess it's not the same this time.
The screen is functioning and everything is running it's just that the backlight is not on, it appears to be dim and sort of impossible to use unless you already know where everything is by heart. Anyone has any idea what might be the problem ?? or has anyone had the same problem before ?? thnx

maybe check the scroll wheel for setting the instrument lightning brightness (to the left of the light switch). Or check settings - controldisplay - brightness on idrive... ?

idrive screen backlight problem
I had this problem with my 2008 X5 and after 2 dealers looked at it, it turned out to be a faulty screen and was replaced under warranty.

If you battery is weak from minmal driving, or excessive accessory use with the engine off, all kinds of wierdness will show up from blank iDrive screens, to funky computer/audio operatios, etc. If the dealer replaces the iDrive screen, chances are they mis diagnosed the issue. For if it were the screen, an iDrive reset would not correct the issue.

Press the in-dash DVD eject button along with the in-dash CD eject button along with the volume knob altogether for a few seconds. This is equivalent to a PC's CNTRL-ALT-DEL.

ok new update .. after almost a week with the screen backlight not functioning, the light suddenly came back to life today while driving
the question is: should i follow up with the dealer to check what the problem is/was or should i just ignore and be happy that all is ok now ??

I am having the same exact issue. My screen did the same thing. It started working again and lasted for a week and it went dim again. Does anyone think it could be the cold?

I don't think it is a cold issue. It is more likely a poorly designed iDrive system. I don't think software resets and temp are related. Clearly a software bug.

2008 X6 iDrive Black Screen Problem
I just got a preowned x6. Have had less than 3 weeks and already experienced the "black screen" on start up randomly 3 times... anyone who had that problem ever get it completely fixed?
I'm taking mine in for service this Thursday, 11/18 but they dealer already told me they'll run tests and if it comes back "clean" there's nothing they can do...? Please help. This is my first beamer and I love my x6 but this is ridiculous as you all already know. I was an Infiniti guy for years and fell in love with the x6 in 2008 when I first saw it. Finally got it and I hope I don't regret it. Thanks in advance, Eric in MD. |

Last year my 08 x5 did this a few times when the cold weather started. it seemed on really cold days it did this. but i would just turn the car back off and on and it would work again. well this year it doesn't seem to want to come back on. same time of year the cold came and now it doesn't work again. is it cold related or just coincidence i don't know but it seems a lot of the electronics in the car seem to act slower in the cold. Has anyone come across a fix for this yet. Is it just some led's that need to be replaced or is it software?
