Speedometer off from factory?
My wife's 2012 35d with sport package & 20" wheels, she noticed the other day on approach to two separate roadside radar speed indicators, that her speedometer & HUD is off by 3 mph. She informed me of this and I was thinking, no way it could be off by that much! Checked it with my gps, and it's also showing 3 mph off. The truck constantly is showing 3 mph UNDER speed, which should also throw off the odometer, racking up more miles than what is actually being driven on the truck.
Anyone else checked their speedometers with gps? Nothing has been changed on this truck, it's all stock. |

Mine is 4 MPH off. The M3 was also off by 4 MPH.

It's an overestimation which for whatever reason is there by design, but it can be disabled through coding.

Well, what I'm gathering here is it's not uncommon. And if 3 other devices are registering my speed to be 3 mph under what's stated on my vehicle's dash and HUD, I might be inclined to believe them.
Plus! This would cause ~5% increase in odometer mileage being added to the truck that isn't being driven. If the truck has 50,000 miles driving, my wife's X5 will show 52,500 miles! |

5km/h aka 3mph off by standard + tire/wheel diameter, and there you have your problem. I am sure mileage of the car is calculated differently by an ISO Standard or something.

I had mine coded to remove the "overestimation". Unfortunately, only the cluster was able to be coded. The HUD still shows about a 3-4mph difference from the analog gauge. Little annoying. |

They can all be off. LOL. I had a Buick one time that did not put on miles.
Drove to Florida and Back, seems it only put on a 100 or 200 miles. Than you might drive down to the grocery and would be ok. A friend drove the car and forgot to tell, do not go by the odometer. So he wanted to go 20 miles for a turn. He drove an drove, it never got to 20 miles. I don't know how far out of the way he went LOL LOL. It was a low mileage Riv. |

I wonder why the HUD would be different.

The digital matches the analog. My coder can't find the line that turns off the overestimation for the HUD. Anyone know where it's buried?

FYI 49mph in my mini = 45mph and 50mph in my x5 = 45mph. i just learn what the difference is and adjust for it in my head. Last edited by note46; 02-27-2014 at 10:03 AM.. Reason: added fyi |
