TPMS sensor question

I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this:
Do the TPMS sensors have to be pregrammed to the vehicle to work correctly?
Probably a stupid question but I'm looking to buy another set of wheels and just get the TPMS sensors, wheels, and tires as a package. I didn't know if I will have to get the car programmed every time I swap out between the 2 sets of wheels (winter and summer).

I just had new rims installed today with a brand new set of TPM sensors. The sensors wouldn't reset with the summer wheels still in the car, but worked fine after I unloaded the extra wheels.

After the wheels were put on with the new sensors, I reset the TMPS through IDrive started driving and everything came up green. Couldn't be easier.

2010-2011 X5 (E70)
1. Inflate all tires to correct pressure specification as indicated on the Vehicle Tire Placard.
2. Press the MENU button on the iDrive controller.
3. Open the iMenu.
4. Select “Vehicle Info” and press the controller.
5. Select “Vehicle Status” and press the controller.
6. Select “Reset TPM” and press the controller.
7. Drive for a few minutes to complete reset. If driving is stopped before the proper distance, reset will resume at the next drive cycle. When reset has completed, the tire graphics in the display will turn green.

Be aware that the Sensors in wheels for the 2007-2009 are not compatible with the 2010-2011.. For the Three series they changed with the 09/09 production.... just had to replace the TPMS in my winter wheels for my 2011 335is .. I had used them on my 2008 E93.

The X5 switch dates maybe different.. just be sure to check that the TPMS in the wheels you get are for YOUR MODEL YEAR...
