X5 xdrive 35i RUSTED COILS on cyl 5, 6, - cyl 5 misfire
Car has 140K miles. Wife bought it used,
codes: 2EFE Combustion Misfires several cylinders detected. 2F03 Misfire Cylinder 5 detected 2EE0 Misfire several cylinders Fuel injection deactivation 2EF1 MISFIRE Cylinder 5 Fuel Injector deactivation 2EE2 Misfire several cylinders Damaging exhaust gas after starting up 2EF3 cylinder 5 Damaging exhaust gas after starting up 2FE2 Crankcase ventilation heating activation line disconnected So I replaced a rusted cyl 5 coil with a new coil, and it started running great, but had this recurring engine fault: 28A0 Throttle valve opening angle - intake pipe absolute pressure comparison too low. Then after a few of those resets, all the original faults came back So I pull the cyl 5 coil, and the new one is rusted! I then pulled the 6 coil which is even WORSE. So here's the plan: I just replaced the Cyl 5 fuel injector, but I'm not putting it back together until I get new spark plugs for all cyl., and I will clean the rust out of the coil ports and stick in new coils in each one. We shall see... But I'd like some advice from you wizards. look at these photos - WTF is causing the coils to rust? I replaced Cyl 5 coil with a new coil, and it worked for two days, then I pulled it and the new one was rusting very quickly. Would a Bad spark plug cause the coil to overheat? I have ordered new spark plugs as well as the &%*(E$ socket you need to reach down the crooked well to replace these teensy 14mm plugs.... Is BMW trying to build cars you can't work on? Oh, wait, I know the answer to that one. But, could my coils be overheating from some wiring/computer issue? I read somewhere that the design of the X% means water is just pouring off the hood and windshield and down over the engine, which just has a little half-a$$ed plastic cover on it, so the water just pours down into the rear coil wells. Has anyone heard of this causing the back coil wells filling with water? I can't see how this could be a cyl head leak or something from the radiator - the coolant is fine, no smell of coolant... no smell of oil. just the gorsh durn coil wells on cyl 5 and 6 rusting my coils. could it be a flood damaged car and nobody told us when we bought it? any ideas would be welcome |

I personally have never seen that but you might be onto something about the cheap plastic water diversion. A good test would be run water on the windshield for a while and see what gets wet. Maybe a little custom water diversion is needed.
If it’s any consolation I keep a spare coil in my car at all times… |

I hope its only water.
I am going to do water test after I'm done making the repairs... Hopefully new plugs and the new fuel injector will fix this and it will run on 6 cylinders instead of 5.
Any other hints or ideas are welcome. thanks to all! |

Are your engine bay partitions in good shape? They are known to break / crack / leak and cause these types of issues.

did you get this figured out? i had the same problem. evreytime it would rain or i'd wash the car it would throw codes and missfire like hell. replaced the partitions and still had the same problem. i remembered there was insulation over 5,6. i replaced it and the plugs/coils and its been great ever since.
