Snow Tires?
Hey everyone,
I'm a newbie, so i thought i would introduce myself. My name is John and i'm from Milwaukee, WI. Anyway, it's getting to that time of year again where i'm in the market for some winter tires. This time its for 2009 X5. Here in Wisconsin i need a good winter tire for the amount of driving i do. The stock tires really don't cut it in the weather i typically experience. So I've been hearing a lot about the brand called "Nokian" on some other forums. Has anyone had any experience with this brand of tires? I've researched them quite a bit and they seem like pretty good tires. They seem a bit pricey, but if they are half as good as the reviews seem to suggest, then i have no problem paying a little bit more for them. Safety is something i absolutely will not sacrifice in the winter. Something really caught my eye about this particular tire though. According to the Nokian Website "the Hakkapeliitta R can save you .21 gallons of gasoline for every 100 miles you drive compared to a standard all-season tire". Seems pretty incredible - i'm always trying to increase my MPG in any way possible. Anyway, has anyone heard of these Hakkapeliitta R Tires? I'm trying to place an order for my tires within a couple days so i'd like to know what i'm getting into before i buy them if anyone has any experiences or advise, thanks! |

Snow Tires??
You don't need snow tires for an AWD suv. Look into continental DWS all season tires. They are rated #1 for most luxury SUVs including the X5.

I did lots of research on this last year. I selected Bridgestone Blizzaks and they've been fantastic. I have 18inch wheels / tires. We had a pretty good winter in the northwest and the Blizzaks were great.

I have a 2012 X5 SAV, which means I have the 20-inchers. I bought the car in May and I will be swapping the stock Michelin summer performance tires for Pirelli Scorpions in November. In March I will swap them out and will continue with the Michelins through Nov 2012 (if they last that long), then winter 2012 with the Scorpions again. Once the Michelins run their life out, I will swap them for the all-season Conti DWS, and will test them in snow to see if I can do without the Scorpions. Bottom line, the longterm plan is to have the Coni all-season ones full time, for my type of driving. I had all-seasons on my previous X5 and they were flawless in Boston snow (but I did not have 20-inchers though)...

We have Pirelli Scorpions on the X5 and Blizzaks on the ML and they are both high quality winter options that perform admirably in the worst conditions. |

Do not trust your life, during winter seasons, with a jack-of-all-trades (all-season) tires. Considering you need to slow/stop a 5k lbs vehicle, you can't go wrong with dedicated snows. I suggest 2 sets of wheels...summer/winter.
I run Conti' DWS during warm season and dedicated snow tires (Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme) during winter season. My family's lives are worth it. |

I was darn impressed with the Pirelli Ice & Snows last winter. They were great even on ice. As their name implies.

If I might add my 2 penny's.
With where you live, I would definitely consider it... As you will see this winter, the problem is with stopping, and that's where the winter tires will shine. One other thing to consider is, "non-directional tread pattern". It allows for a much better tire rotation, ie. left to right in addition to front to back with same size front/rear wheels. Lastly...go back to last Nov,Dec, Jan...I believe we almost beat this to death! Good luck |
