Ultimate Service? More like Ultimate BS!

So I have a 2012 Msport with !4K miles on it and just over a year and a half old. Over the past week I've been smelling a rotten sour smell when I first get into the SUV in the morning and turn the A/C on. It goes away or at least I can't smell it after about 5 minutes. So I go into my local dealership and explain the problem and I was told that the in cabin filter needs to be replaced. So I started to schedule an appointment and then was told it would cost me a little over $200 to replace. I said "doesn't this fall under the Ulitmate Service" And I was told yes it does, but BMW NA will only replace every 3 years and mine isn't even 2 years old. This is the dumbest thing I've heard. Filters all don't last the same amount of time. A lot has to do with where you live and the conditions you drive in. So to set a 3 year interval is absurd. I just ordered a loaded 535 Msport 2 weeks ago and I told them at BMW NA that if thats their idea of Ultimate Service, I'll be cancelling my order and buying elsewhere. The supervisor said he will investigate and call me back.

Your AC evaporator needs to be disinfected. There is a spray that kills the bacteria which cause that odour.

I'm not too happy with BMWNA myself at this time. My sway bar links were worn after 62k miles, and they refused to cover them under my platinum extended warranty because they considered it to be "normal wear and tear"! and that allows them to deny coverage. Fortunately my dealership stepped up to the plate and "goodwilled " it because i have 3 BMWs, (2 M models).

I too am considering switching back to Porsche, or going an entirely different route with a Cadillac CTS V.

This is all good. These guys don't have to do good things anymore because there are plenty of people waiting to buy BMW's. I bought a 2012 35d at the end of June. It was a dealer car never titled and only 6200 miles. It has a clunking sound in the tail gate area and has been in 7 times. For my last visit I also had photos of water dripping into the car from the over head lights. They are willing to put me into a different X5 but want to give me 2500 less than I paid (for two months of driving it which half was in their shop) for my car. Called BMWNA and they said they can't do anything because the dealer is trying to help. They want me to pay over 7K more than I did for my dealer 12 for a dealer 13. I could have bought a new 13 for that price when I got my 12. Not happy as it sounds like I'm going to end up keeping a car that will smell like mold/mildew must along with clunking in the trunk. Ultimate Driving Machine.

My personal experience has been more than excellent with BMW service - especially when compared with our past Mercedes experience! I'm on my 7th BMW and for me it's about the car, but deep down the service also keeps me coming back. Owning a BMW is generally a very good ownership experience (from my perspective).

I had the same issue with an M3 I bought. It eventually went away with our dry climate but some reading online revealed that it is mould/bacteria that accumulates on your A/C evaporator and there is a spray you can buy at any automotive shop that you spray into the intake and it kills the bacteria and freshens your car .

I love how people bring their car into service and self-diagnose it, demanding they fix something that may or may not be broken.

I have the same issue with both of my X5s where do you spray the disinfectant? And is the disinfectant sold in the automotive section at parts stores? I get the smell only when the AC is not on, it's a mildew/dirty sock kind of smell.

Well BMW NA called me back and said they will not be changing the filters. Apparently their sales are so good they need not worry about retaining customers. So I pulled the housing out myself and found that one of the filters had fallen out of the housing it snaps into. They hang upside down under a shroud to protect them from moisture. So the filter that had fallen out was laying down in the well and was all wet and smelled just like the smell that occurs when I start it in the morning. Something as simple and cheap as a filter BMW's Ultimate Service doesn't cover even though it was probably an installation error when the car was built!

Normally you spray into where the fresh air enters the cabin. Not sure though where that is on the X5 but it should be the cabin filter inlets under the hood.

Just had my wife's filter in her X3 replaced right at 2 years old after I got a service notification email for it. Your service department lied to you. If it's covered, it's covered...

Yes, I checked my owners manual and it tells you all of the service intervals. It's 2 years on the in cabin filter. Even though I have 5 months until the vehicle is 2 years old, they still won't change it.
