I'd take an ml55/63 over an x5 or RR anyday. I own a bmw and a mercedes. They're both high quality. The mb sucks because I like bmw statements are ignorant

I just had an X5 as a loaner car on thursday. Worst car I have driven. I have had a pair of ML's and they are much better not to mention cheaper than the X5. The only thing I liked on the X5 was how cold the A/C got but other than that I didnt see a point of getting an X5 or a 5 series.

x5 thoughts
I did the autocross here in minnesota when they were luanching the new X5 this spring. First the professional driver took us out around the track and did a few warm-up laps and scarred the crap out of us, then it was our turn.
First we drove the MB ML, each person (3) did 2 laps, then we went to the X5 (4.8l), then to the Lexus, then back to the MB for 2 more laps and so on for an hour. After words they asked each group what they thought (about 10 groups), Of all the groups everyone agreed the X5 out handled the MB and the lexus, the MB was second and the lexus a very far behind 3rd. I drive a E36 m3 so i am very aware of bmw handling, and the X5 was pretty damn impresive, it was quick and could handle corners without issue, and it weighs 5300 lbs. We beat the crap out of the veihicles, in fact they only get about 30miles on a set of tires, but the MB was very nice, but in the end the X5 out handled everything else. Now as for interior and options, ill be honest, i didnt really care what it looked like once i started to drive the X5. Last edited by mcdonaldb; 07-07-2007 at 07:27 PM.. |

My wife wants the RRS, but she likes the new X5...IF and only if it has running boards. I do think the running boards on the X5 sets it off big time. I'm trying to get her to change her mind. Buying a SUV with these gas prices just doesn't compute for me. Additionally, the RRS is produced by a company that is always close to dead last in reliability.
I was in the passenger's side during the test drive for both the RRS and X5 so I can't really speak about the power, but I think my wife said the X5 (with six cylinder) has more power between the two. |

The X5 drives more like a car (hence "SAV"). The Range Rover drives more like a SUV. I personally prefer the driving dynamics of the X5, the rest are not as high on my list of priorities. @OP, what are you looking for in a SUV/SAV?

I think there is an option that comes standard on the RRS supercharged and is optional on the regular RRS that is an actively adjustable sway bar system, so it handles way better on the road. Might want to look into that.

I agree--never liked any of the MB SUVs. Very plain looking...

Eh... to each his own. I do like the X5 and the RR... However theres just something appealing about an SUV that'd walk most cars half its size, including 335i.
From those two choices, I agree that the RR looks better but the X5 should be a better drive |

F an SUV, get a wagon.
Are you truly going to need the offroad capability? Or do you just need the storage/seating capacity? If it's the latter, save the gas and safety concerns, for yourself and others, and get a wagon. E63 wagon? S4 wagon? 335i wagon? 84' celebrity wagon? |

i'd take the Range Rover Sport Supercharged over the x5 anyday. Sure the x5 will outperform the range rover all day long but thats all its good for, on road and its dull looks. Simply put, you get a bit of everything in the RRSS.

BMW X5 all the way.
Owned a MB....didn't like it. Own a RR S SC....you pay way too much for what your getting.

What part of SoCal are you from? :P. Admittedly, lots of RRs in the nicer places (just drive down Sunset...every fifth car is a RR of some sort)...but I see numerous X5s (E53s, E70s) and not nearly as many RRs around. Maybe it's just OC.

Test drove both several times and my RR sport will be delivered in a few weeks. The performance of the X5 just didn't outweight the looks and feel of the RR. Also drove a Cayenne GTS but just couldn't justify the extra 10k and kept going back to the RR....
