Dinan exhaust X5M??

Hi guys...

I just had a Dinan X5M exhaust installed yesterday. I've only probably driven it 30 miles or so, but I'm not sure if it sounds any different than stock?

Also, and it could just be me, but it almost feels slower than before. I know the exhaust valves were capped off, so I shouldn't feel a reduction in power. But I do! Is it just me?

Will this exhaust change in tone over the next 1000 miles of so? Am i imagining a reduction oin power?

Your help and guidance is much appreciated!

The sound should be a little different but with a Dinan system on the X5M it will not be that big of a difference. Remember the X5M already has large piping so the biggest difference comes from a free flowing muffler. I highly doubt there is a reduction in power with this system. The sound will change a little bit (louder) as it "breaks" in. Give it some time and you should be fine but don't except a huge difference with the system.

Best Regards,

OP I have had a Dinan exhaust on my X5M and there is a huge difference in sound in my opinion. You have to break the exhaust in.

It's an axel back. You want more aggressive sound, remove the DPs.

I think the Dinan has a great blend of DD and aggressive tone. Inside the car you will hear a subtle difference. Get into the 3500-5500RPM and its way different.

If you are outside of the vehicle it sounds fantastic.

I did not nor was i expecting to hear from inside the car a completely opposite difference. Because I know that was not going to be the case. It's not a straight pipe, no cats V8 M3.

Have someone drive the car with you on the outside. You will hear the difference.

Break it in. If you wanted something more aggressive there are a few systems out there, but ultimately you will get the same variation. The cabin is well insulated and unless you start removing the cats, put a supersprint x pipe or something like that. It will not be in your face crazy.

I had Akra then replaced to Dinan.
I can tell you for sure that Dinan muffler is a lot louder than Akra full system (no DP) even with the exhaust valve open.

Really? The Dinan is louder than the Akra? Is that the only reason you swapped the Akra out? I am thinking of getting the Akra (no dp) with CF tips. I don't care for the polished ends much.

Thanks southshoreM3. I guess having an F12 M6 with an Eisenmann race has jaded me a bit. I put about 150 miles on the X5M today and it can hear a difference already. I live in Providence, who does your work?

Yes that sound will definitely jade you! Like my E90 m3 with no cats and on a cold morning light today when I get into the upper RPM it affects my thought process!

I get everything done at BMW Norwell.

Tom Toppan is my service advisor. I used to go to NORWOOD, but got so sick of the service staff and new GM of parts and service was completely obnoxious to me.

If you go to NORWOOD I love Steve Richard and Matt the Dinan tech.

Good guys, but was getting fed up with service.

Norwell is a smaller shop, but they go out of their way to help me. Even installed my ESS blower on my M and allowed me to keep he warranty.

Hit me up any time.

Akra looked amazing and I'm sure it's the best performance gain for X5Ms but even though I liked the sound, it's really the same loudness with stock system. And I kinda liked the "fart" sound when I shift aggressively in stock but after Akra, I lost the farting sound.

Be honest with you, Dinan sound is not good as Akra (or even their own system for M3s) but it's about 10-15% louder and I got the "fart" sound back when I shift in high RPM.

For the price (esp. when they're in 15% off sale), I'm happy with Dinan.

Yes, I like the 'fart" sound as well. So you don't get that sound with the Akra? Why not?

Somehow Akra never "fart" in hard shifting while Dinan farts every hard shifting.
So I'm overall happy with my Dinan setup now. =D

Personally I've found the dinan system sounds much deeper than akra w/o dp's in person. According to the 1/4 mile thread the dinan exhaust has proven to show gains so I'm not sure why you feel it is slower (should be +8hp and +7lb/ft). I'd definitely allow it to break in, mine has gotten slightly louder as the miles got put on. I've yet to hear dinan w/ dp's but that is next on my list. I may be switching to Velos software if dinan doesn't release a stage 2 with dp's etc soon.

Lol at the "fart" sound my 5 yr old laughs and says my unit is farting every time I cold start and it does the cat warm up high idle. I have catless pipes and Eisenmann race so it is loud.
