This explains it, as I noticed this at the dealer the other day. Two 2011 X5s had different MPGs printed on their stickers. I was surprised by the 17/25, b/c it wasn't that much different from my diesel that I have on order. I guess 16/23 is more realisic.

From my past experience owning a 2007 E92-335i and my current E90-335d, the difference in real world fuel economy between gas and diesel versions is greater than that expressed by EPA figures. The N54 (now N55) engine burns more fuel in city driving than was suggested by either EPA or Transport Canada. On the other hand, the 335d seems to exceed EPA ratings for highway driving and meet the ratings issued by Transport Canada.

I would expect similar differences for the gas and diesel versions of the E70. So, it is no surprise to me that the EPA has downgraded the fuel economy ratings for the E70-35i.
