Example: going from 10% throttle in cruising to 70% throttle, the car will feel snappier in response vs the old restrictive filter. You'll also need to do this when holding a gear at an RPM, say 4000k. The automatic transmission shifts too early during normal driving conditions to let the driver feel much of a difference after the minor gain in HP. The gain in HP in WOT is not too much either because of the % gain in HP is so small in relation to how much the car have already. a 3 HP gain on a 150 hp car is a lot in ration vs a 3 HP gain in a 555 HP beast . But extra HP is extra HP. I'll take it any way I can
that is correct.. and great post op, thanks for the info!

It appears these are completely different from the intakes on the N63 50i...

The filters on the N63 appear to be embedded into the center of a molded panel inside the airboxes. Completely different system from the S63 on the "M". This could be contributing to the 150hp difference between the two engines as it appears to be significantly more restrictive...

I did a quick search online and haven't found any aftermarket filters or intake systems for the 50i. Looking at the realoem diagram, now I know why.

Time permitting, I may dive into the airboxes this weekend to get a better understanding of what the filters look like and how they are held in there...

Below is the filter element outlined in red.

I also have the K&Ns in mine. Come to think of it, it might be time to pull them out and give them a little cleaning!

Old thread but the OEM paper filter wasn't poorly designed to begin with. A good reason why one would switch over to K&N is the longevity of the filter and not for marginal performance gains.

Just replaced my filters with the K&N ones. I have to say that throttle response is noticeably sharper though my oem filters had 40k miles and noticeable debris on them. Could be due to cleaner filters most likely. Don't think this is placebo though, induction noise has slightly increased also

After hearing some good reviews about the k&n filter, I decided to order one and since I saw a good price at 4wheelonline. I'm not expecting a big improvement also; I just want a good replacement for the stock.

Thank you for the excellent write up! Doing my ride tonight... I also will be replacing my cabin air filter. I plan on taking pics like this and posting.

Cheers

Update... Easy install, like 5 minutes. Took longer to wipe down the inside of the intake than replacing the filters. I was shocked at how dirty the factory ones were, and the dealership just sold it to me in March. It was a re-certified model but can't see how the factory filters made it through the inspection?

I am expecting mine to show up today, and then I will get back to the drag strip, and see if they make any difference there, got some baseline runs last week.

Interested in any updates. I threw some in a couple of weeks ago purely because I can clean/re-use.

Well, it was a hotter day than last week, but I did run 2 10ths faster consistently. I did also remove my roof rack with cargo box, so I cannot say for sure it was the filters, but I am not complaining.

That and the fact that they are re-usable is always a plus!

Thanks for the post. I used this to replace my filters, and it worked great. Nice to have the pics as a guide. $100 on Amazon.

thanks for the instruction.

I have 2013 x6m with 46k miles, BMW dealer at Mount Laurel, NJ charges $549+ tax for a simple air filter(they called it intake silencer) replacement, since the cost of the filer is less then $100, hence they charge over $400 for the labor.

wondering what makes them to charge such high price for this service?
