Tire replacement

All,

I just came back from dealership they recommend to replace both rear tires even though I have a nail in one sidewall with a slow leak. I have a staggered setup.

To make the matters worse, they just replaced the tires in December or 5000 miles ago.

Their explanation - due to tire wear this may cause a problem with differential. I've had them measure the tread depth of the current tire and that is between 8/32- 9/32

I am currently running conti dws6.

Any thoughts / suggestions if I should be replacing both ?

They are correct that you need to replace the tire, as sidewalls cannot be repaired. However, if your good tire has 8-9/32 vs. 10/32 brand new, screw the dealership-you don't need to replace it. Don't ever go to a dealership for tires. Biggest ripoff ever.

I believe the guideline is no more than 3/32 difference between current and new to avoid problems.

Last time I bought tires at the dealership, they beat Tire Rack's price. Just make sure they price match and charge reasonable install.

Tire Rack also used to have a service to shave a new tire to a certain depth. I'm not sure if the still offer it or if it only applied to certain tires, but worth researching if you're over 3/32 off.

Quick update... Since I have conti dws06 they come with 12 month 2-32 hazard warranty. Dealer replaced the tire at no cost. The only cost was mounting and balancing..... Thank you continental
