Most Reliable E70: 2010 xDrive30i?
I've had my E90 for about 18 months now, so it's time to think about what my next car will be, even if it will be awhile. But I do tend to trade way too often...
I've been interested in getting an E70 lately. I guess I'm not the normal car guy in that I really don't care about speed. I care more about options and features. And I also really care about maintenance and cost of ownership. That said, would you say that the 2010 X5 with the N52 engine would be the most reliable E70 with the lowest maintenance cost? With the '10 I would get CIC iDrive (must have). I would miss the LCI improvements, but aside from the powertrain, it's hard to tell that much changed. Thoughts? |

My wife has a 09 3.0i x5 and it has been very reliable. So far no repairs at all needed and she drove it from 50000kms to 90000kms. Only thing she has ever brought it in for were the oil changes once a year.

There was no activity or response, so I tried to steer you in the right direction (which I thought was xoutpost.com). However, all of the X have their known issues, even the 30i. Water pump, therm., cats, I've read transfer case, etc...Purchase CPO if you can, if not make sure you get service records and have a good indy shop that you have access to.

I also switched from E90 to E70 several years ago. I have 09 x5 30i. However I want to advise you I had several problems with my X5. I just don't think the engine was meant for such a heavy car.
Our E90 is lasting forever without major repair. However my X5 had some repairs done to the engine and I have some concerns about the 6sp transmission (if you look up, you'll find out about the common transmission lagging issue, esp at 3rd gear). Simply put, I advise you to look for the turbo charged 35i or the new F15. 30i is extremely slow if that matters to you. Even if you are not a spirited driver, catching up highway speed is always nervous for me. Don't forget that pre-LCI E70 have plastic facia that will become fainted over time and that the LCI E70 has 8 speed transmission. At 65mph the RPM stays at around 2500 with 6sp. I'm sure 8sp does for less rpm, thus lower cabin noise. Also 0-60 is +8 second on pre-LCI while LCI has around low-mid 6 second. Last edited by B///MWGuy; 03-03-2016 at 03:36 PM.. |

I have a 35i. Been great so far but only have 48 k miles. Just did bms stage 1. Lots of torque stock, a lot more with bms. Been fairly reliable, but I bought rt66 warranty to 100k.

The extra stuff was the oil filter housing leak, valve cover leak. Other than that in the shop now getting all the fluids changed and plugs replaced. Trans, diff and rear diff and brake fluid. Been great and no issues considering the miles. My BMW service adviser advised to stay away from the v8's as they have lots of issues. I'm sure their are members who swear by them, and are problem free. but he told me percentage wise the v8 are in all the time with expensive repairs and will ask you to keep your wallet open when the mileage and years Tak on. Same message I've heard from many independent BMW Tecks as well. |
