X6 2009 35D whistle noise
Hi, just joined this forum searching for some information about a noise coming from RHS engine bay. X6 2009 35D model, noise started after last service at about 122,000KM. whistle/shrill sound mostly only when engine is cold, at around 2000RPM, so if take off from traffic lights shrieks a bit, then stops about 4000RPM. Again almost exclusively when engine cold. Took to local mechanic and of course when he went around the block wouldn't do it, but then returned the next day. Ive managed this for last 10,000Km, no other noticeable issues, no smoke, no loss of power. Took in yesterday for 130,000Km service and find the issue. They call me and said sounds like turbo on way out, however, they can't get the sound to occur when in the shop, only when they drive around, and from first start. They pumped smoke through the engine and said no leaks anywhere, so apparently no air loss. So, mechanic wants to replicate the sound in garage and put stethoscope of something on turbo to listen for expanding metal?? But as Ive said, only makes sound when car in motion.
Ive searched a few threads, talking about a bunch of other things but not failing turbo. Obviously wanting to find another remedy rather than the $$$ turbo charger, any ideas? |

it makes that noise only in motion cause thats the time load on engine is higher therefore boost is higher with higher turbo rpm.. looks like a turbo issue 99% and there wont be any power lose or something if there is an imbalance on the intake blades.. it ll only whistle no leak or smoke.. but more you drive like this more likely it ll go worse and then problem wont be only the turbo itself.. you ll put the engine at risk.. and if the intake side is slightly imbalanced it can be fixed with proper machinery in short time.. and it ll cost probably 1/4 of a new turbo..
