X6 - tank doesnt full fill up?? why?

Even after the nozzle pops the gas meter shows room for may be a couple of gallons of gas??? its a pain to have the guy pumping gas to fill up the tank even when the nozzle keeps popping but the meter shows there is space to fill in the tank? why doesnt it fully fill up like all other normal cars? is this a sensor issue that i need to get fixed? thanks

Alpine, this issue has nothing to do with your car. This issue has to do with the sensor in the nozzle of the pump. The sensor in the nozzle senses fumes, that's how it knows the tank is full. Sometimes it's incorrect. My G35 coupe always had this problem especially when the outside temperature was hot or I ran the tank all the way down to empty. Don't worry about it, just have the gass attendant do his job and stand there for a minute.

Ya, bit it happens at every single pump and its specially irritating when I am in NJ where I have to try different languages to explain to the attendant that he needs to keep pressing even when it says its full

Yeah it's retarded. Like I said it's the sensor in the pump nozzle. You can have the gas attendent flip the nozzle 180 degrees, then it will pump without stop until the gas flows out of your tank and onto the floor. I had them do this all the time, I just look at how many gallons get filled (so nothing goes on the floor). LOL

I guess I can try that but I have never experienced this with any other car ..they all said it was full when the tank was actually full

You can try taking it to the dealer, but I don't know what they would even test for or do because there is absolutely no communication between your tank and the gas nozzle other than the fume sensor (which is part of the pump nozzle).

This this happen all the time, or just when you run it down all the way? Like if you had half a tank and then wen to go fill up, will this happen?

yup had dealer check it and of course nothing wrong they blamed gas pumps, let it go as it wasn't going anywhere.

I understand about New Jersey , took the summer off one year and took my kids on cross country camping trip. I had to drive on the NJ turnpike and I cussed the entire time, one end to the other. The kids were laughing the whole time.

This issue was explained before, the X6 fuel tank is split into two parts! When you fill up your tank the first part will get filled up first while the second part will take some time for the pump inside the tank to fill it up thats why your/our X6's will never get filled up full tank at the gas station.

I donno if that's true or not, but check out this post:
http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=298253

My fuel guage needle takes 2-3 restarts from a short drive to reach full tank, but if you drive for a long distance it'll never reach full.

So for those people who's in tank pump is malfunctioning, wouldn't a clear indication be that your fuel gage says empty, but you can only fill up half your tank (11 gallons)?

Also does anyone know how many lines are going from tank to engine? I would assume there would be 2, since there are 2 tanks, this would also prevent engine stall caused by in tank pump malfunction.

Had same issue with my gas tank. Turned out to be the fuel sensors on both sides which were replaced by the dealership.

did they fill up the tank and verify that the tank was not filling up? did your dealer give you a hard time?

Can you post a scanned copy of your service documnent that the dealer must have handed to you after the service was completed? My dealer said nothing wrong, its normal for X6 and X5, which I do not agree to because I have owned and E70 X5 and a bunch of other Bimmers and have never seen anything like this

I've resolved it on my end by letting it go until it automatically stops.. waiting about 10-15 seconds then topping it off. Gets me past full. This thing needs a third tank the way it eats gas!
