I think BMW is preparing for a shift in family automobile requirements.
The economy is not great. Fuel prices are high. Housing sucks. Knowing all this I have heard from several friends they are reducing the amount of cars they have. Several have something like this. 1. Sports car 2. Minivan/SUV 3. Luxury sedan 4. Beater car. The are reducing expenses by dropping down to one or two cars. The X6 will fill the need for 1-3, sports, SUV, luxury sedan. I think we will see folks gravitate more to crossover type vehicles that can meet their needs where 2-3 cars were required in the past. As a result they will opt for one higher end car. This is where BMW is putting R&D. They know the market for gas guzzling sports cars will drop. If families are going to get 15-20MPG, they want a lot for their money and small sports cars with big engines ain't it.
