Non Run-Flat Math

Just an FYI for those considering switching to non run-flats (go flats?). My 2012 X5 35i is at 26K miles and the oem run-flats are starting to get down close to the wear bars. I didn't want to deal with replacement later into the winter so I pulled the trigger last week. Purchased 4 255/50R-19 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season's non run-flat on sale at Tire Rack for $726.60 shipped. Purchased E70/71 spare tire kit at getBMWparts for $387.95 shipped. Paid installer $95.00 to mount everything up (space saver tire needs mounting). Total out $1209.55. Having stayed with all season run-flats my expense range shipped and mounted would have been a high of $1436.00 or a low of $1124.00 or somewhere in between depending on which tires I purchased. It was hard to swallow paying more than half the tires purchase price for the spare kit which may never see daylight again but I got over it and am enjoying a very smooth quiet ride on the Pirelli's. I'm thinking of doing the same thing for my E92 next spring.

haha, nice! at least the next time you have to buy tires you wont have to buy another spare, so the savings are really going to add up. I did the same thing but with 20s.. got continental dws tires, was about 1k for the set. I still would like to get the spare, I do have a portable air compressor and tire plug kit in the back for the time being.

Let's not forget the math of reducing a substantial amount of weight at each axle. gains in MPG, comfort, performance, etc...

Spare kit can be seen at getBMWparts.com. They had the best price on it. It's a steel wheel, a 155/80/18 Dunlop space saver tire (looks like a motorcycle tire and will need mounted to wheel) a styrofoam disc that holds the jack and lug wrench and a metal cup and wing bolt. Lift the rear cargo floor cover and feel around the middle of the carpeted floor for the hole the wing bolt screws in to. I used a sharp punch to go through the carpet and leave a hole. Put the spare in upside down put the cup in the center hole of wheel and bolt it down with wing bolt. Stick the styrofoam disc down in the wheel and your good to go.
