Do I really have to take it easy when putting in a new tires?

The manual says that I have to take it easy when driving the first 300 km (200 miles) of new tires. I just put the 215's in ferric grey on my car and I need to drive car on the highway (speeds up till 85 miles or 140 km). What's the worst that could happen...I understand breaking in the engine and the brakes, but tires???

I personally would not trist this. Honestly, the manuals, or at least some parts are too much idiot resistant, so many times the write there what is really useless or misleading. If I were you I would not even keep that part of manual in mind and drive normal or as I need.

They are not concerned with speed. They are concerned with abrubt braking or acceleration.

The tires have not seated and lubricant used to mount them may still be on the rim. As a result, quick acceleration or braking can cause the tires to rotate on the rim thereby throwing the wheels out of balance.

There is also a coating on the tires to get them out of the mold, that usually doesnt wear off for the first 150 miles or so, they may be a little bit slippery.
