E70: 2011 vs 2012

I'm currently shopping for a CPO 2011 or 2012 X5 and I looked around a bit but couldn't find a definitive answer to this. Is there any other difference between the 2011 and 2012 other than the coronas and package configurations?

Unrelated to that, anyone know why the multi-contour seats are such a rare beast? Shopping for a 50i online, it seems that only 10% or so have them. Can I assume that the packages and costs for those years weren't favorable to that option? In my F10 (5er), it seems over half have it, as they were included with both sport and m-sport packages. I test drove a 50i today and sat in both the regular and multi-contour seats and determined that they're a must-have. I must be in the minority in that opinion if so few bothered to order them.

Interesting - I'm in the exact same boat as you. So are you set on getting a 50i? The only difference I've seen in the 11/12 is the coronas and packages but some of the late build 2011s have the updated coronas also...

I'm not 100% sure I'll get the 50i, but it's a leading contender. I also considered going full r and getting the X5M, but that's less likely. I kind of regretted getting my 535 instead of a 550, but when I leased it the numbers were hugely different.

I would look at 2011 M Sports if it was my money. I think that's the only year where all 50i M Sports came with Adaptive Drive, which is a 100% must have in my book.

(someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

I have an early (pre 10/10) 2011 50i. Early LCI's such as mine lack a few things:
  • LED coronas
  • Combox
  • 'New style' TPMS

There may be more, but I'm positive on those items.

I presume the retrofit of the combox has been done before on e70s without it?

Yes, but you lose BMW Assist when you retrofit the combox. I'm thinking about the retrofit on mine late this year, when the free 4 years of BMW Assist expire on my car.

You are spot on mate: all M Sports in 2011 had the Adaptive Drive, which is why the M Sport package was so expensive.

And to the OP: yes, apart from the LED coronas and different configurations on the packages, there are not many other differences.

Thanks everyone.

So if I'm shopping, how do I tell what the build date is on the 2011s? (Something with the VIN?) My F10 has the newer combox features that you mentioned and they are nice, though perhaps not a must have.

1FastX5, that looks like an incredibly impressive rig, but I doubt I could afford something like that. Or rather I could, but after I give it to my wife in a few months, I wouldn't be able to get as nice of a sports car for myself. Also, I worry that a highly modded car would be more likely to have problems, whether that worry is valid or not.

Where are you shopping? If you are on cars.com, it will always be mentioned what year the vehicle is. Or you can run the VIN and see it that way. Plenty of places online to run VINs. If you can get a 2012, great. All really depends on your budget. The market is being flooded with 2011s because they are coming off lease, so that might give you the most bang for your buck.

Yeah, mostly cars.com and autotrader.com, as well as keeping an eye on the local BMW dealer websites. I agree that the 2011 seems like a lot better value right now and there are a lot out there. Many, but not all, of the postings include a VIN, so if it's easy to run online to get the info I'll have to try that. Thanks!

Being in CO, extend your search to 500miles, and pick other random cities you may want to fly into and drive your car back to CO... Seattle has a TON of X5's. Some at the dealers, but also some autobrokers too, that buy off of auction and ship in.

Seattle does have a ton of X5's….but it depends on what configuration you're looking for. For what I'm looking for, there is nothing in Seattle.

Does anyone here have a 2011 X5 with LED coronas? I've read the LED Coronas became standard in April 2011…I've run a ton of VINs and have yet to find a 2011 model year X5 built after March 2011….therefore I think you need a 2012 for certain if you want the LED Coronas.

Otherwise, yes, other than the Coronas, it appears just the package configurations changed from 2011 to 2012. For example, it looks like the Tech package in 2012 shed most of it's important components to the Premium Package - Nav., top/rear cameras, etc. The Tech package in 2012 is simply HUD, side-view cameras, and high beam assistant (in 2011, Tech included Nav, cameras, real-time traffic, voice-command, PDC, etc.).

I have a 2012, built in late 2011, don't recall the actual build date. I have the LED corona's. That was one of the reasons to go 2012 for me... It just looked better.

Sounds correct to me. In running tons of 2011/2012 X5 VINs, it looks like 2012 models were built as early as April 2011, so late 2011 would definitely be a 2012 model.

There are so many threads on this forum regarding the Coronas, I feel like I should just hold out for a 2012, though there's a noticeable price jump from 2011 to 2012's right now. And a much bigger selection of 2011's…not many 2012's have come off lease yet.
