Both these vehicles are for Performance Driving at an extreme level. If you are not searching for mountain roads with lots of curves, and driving the vehicle hard and fast much of the time, then a 35i or 50i would be more practical. You are constantly breaking every law in the book if you try to use these vehicles to their potential. They will definitely cruize very nicely, but their real purpose is to pursue the limits in cornering, acceleration, and braking.
They will both do the same things, but the X6 will look better doing it imo. The only limitation would be the 4 versus 5 passengers with the X5. |

X5 M if you think any 3 ton 550HP SAV can be thought of as practical. I chose the X5 for more room and I like the look since I can't say the X6 looks better but that is just my opinion. Coming out of an 08 M3, the X5 M feels great and drives great. I do not miss the M3 near as much as if I bought the X5 5.0. The M is that much better in every way.......Steve

I chose X5M because I feel the ass is better looking than X6M from rear view.

If you are using the word practical then IMHO you probably should be considering some other vehicle. of course it always comes down to definition, so without some parameters of what you mean by practical can't really can't offer even a subjective opinion.

As everyone have mentioned...nothing practical about a M series SUV.
I have recently took the BMW driver training - Fascination course in circuit Mont-Tremblant - Quebec,Canada. They have introduced X5M and X6M into a couple of track exercises as a special treat. I have driven the X6M and really surprised with the pickup speed as compared to my M3 coupe. We also did track lapping in it and again it surprised me with how safe i feel during the lap...it a very impressive M brand for sure. One that not only for off-roading but also for race track. |

Ok...I can see where he is coming from when saying which one is more practical..... I have an X5 and X6M in my garage and I say the X5 is more practical of the two. The reasons are the 5 passenger configuration, more trunk space, and that flip down tailgate the X5 has. Oh...one last thing. The X6M's tailgate opens lower in realation to your garage roof if that makes any sense vs the X5 because of the shape. Which makes getting large objects in and out harder when parked in the garage. Hope this helps.
