Bmw 2013 X5 LCI gear selector

Hi, hoping someone can clarify something for me. I've only recently bought this car and am.really enjoying it. No issues selecting gears or with the gearbox but the gear selector dows make a mechanical whirring noise when moving from park to driver or reverse. Its not a noise that necessarily sounds like something is wrong. I just don't know if it's meant to be there.

My wife has an auto 1 series with what looks like a very similar gear selector and that's totally silent.

Having looked at realoem I'm not seeing any real opportunity to get into the unit to lubricate any moving parts if that's what the issue is.

Does anyone else have a selector that makes a noise and is it meant to?

Mine made that noise and then I noticed I couldn’t move the shifter to M/S. I need to replace it eventually
