Ultimate BMW Road Trip: X6 M at BMW Performance Center by Matt Farah

The Smoking Tire caps off our Ultimate BMW Road Trip with a private day at BMW's test track in Spartanburg, SC. Since we've already tested the M3 and 1M, we take the X6M Crossover on the track to see if there is something it's actually useful for. We are surprised.

Kind of unbelievable performance for a car that sits high.

Personally, I don't like the X6 M but you have to admire what it can do given the size and weight.

having both the m3 and x5m i love both cars. like they said a car that size should not be able to do those moves around the track.

the Torque vectoring is simply amazing

The x6 with 315 wheels is absolutely gorgeous. It's hulk stance from the rear is amazing. No car comes close. These things are extremely popular in NY

I had a chance to see a space grey X6M at MFest and it was gorgeous. The guy was running in the mid to low 13's in the quarter mile. I believe all he had was an RPI exhaust, may have been a full system. It's an amazing machine. You have to love performance automobiles to appreciate its lines and capabilities on and off the track.

So, let me understand this. You buy an X6M or an X5M, both sport activity vehicles that are designed to handle off-road and inclement weather, but they are useless anywhere except on the track?! Why not just buy an actual sports car and a normal SUV?

Change the tires and you are set to go. They just happen to come with summer tires which as we all know, don't do well in the cold and/or rough stuff

I was given one of these for an afternoon, and man I swear I dropped my wallet off at the gas station. With traction turneded completely off it was a complete hooligan to drive. Surprised I did not get arrested while I had it.

X6M is the most capable off-roader from all the bimmers when equipped with right tires for the job
Obviously all Ms and all BMWs with sport package come with summer rubber
So what?
I'll take summer over A/S tires any day
I have to have winter setup separately anyways

What about the X5M? These vehicles are essentially the same with different body designs and available space. Looking at both side-by-side, I prefer the look of the X5M over the X6M.

X5 is great as well, but it's a bit taller with higher center of gravity

Yes, and it does this by sucking GIGANTIC amounts of petrol through its veins. Warming climates wherever it goes

I'd expect brake pads and tyres to last one decent session based on that weight

technological tour de force regarding the ARS system for a car this heavy...

Can you imagine the next redesign (f15/16)? I hear they are going for a 400-500 lb weight saving ala the cayenne redesign..
