I blame the run-flats and not so much the 20" wheels. Though I'm sure the 20" wheels are not the light to begin with either, but I aint' buying some $6k HRE forged wheels.

I'd rather think it has something to do with the fact they are 315 in width. I'm sure 265s would create less rolling resistance, thus resulting in better MPGs.

I'm in the mind set that removing rotational mass and unsprung weight is much more important than rolling resistance. But it's a contributing factor indeed!

Yea tire sizes tend to affect the mpg. Width and diameter, also run-flats contribute to that. Anyway regarding the 50i I'm afraid it will be a considerable difference in mpg compared to the 35i in city driving, i do like 80% city and 20% highway. But like you guys said i need to test drive it and i already booked the test drive for the 50i to next saturday.

I do 90% city driving. iDrive reports at best 14.9MPG. Don't think I've ever broke 15MPG. And this is a tuned 35i.

i can't imagine the 50i being that much worse, and you can still get a tune for even more power and better MPG's around town.

Thanks for the reply, 15mpg is not that bad for a heavy tank like the x5. But it is a big difference from my e90 which is 35mpg(my best) city and highway combined and spirited driving.

The ratings are pretty similar for city - 14 for the 50i and 16 for the 35i.

I'm same as you, 90% city driving. We get 13.5 to 14.0 around town in a 50i, which sounds about right if you're getting 14.9 in a 35i. Neither are very good!

Maybe so, but updated coronas alone cannot justify spending @ 2k more for a year newer model.

That's about the amount of money you'll spend on upgrading them, plus it also means you have an extra year of warranty. Personally, if I would have had the choice, and the vehicle was like for like, I would have spent the extra $2K and gotten the LED coronas for a 2012 as opposed to a 2011.

Depending on the package options chosen, there are more updates in the 2012+ over 2011, that are more extensive than just LED corona's...

There were actually quite a few changes for 2012's. Some may not make a difference depending on your model/trim/configuration.

From the 2012 BMW X5 Press Kit -

2012 model year updates with specific standard, option and package changes.

The 2012 model Year for the BMW X5 xDrive35i and xDrive50i models began with April 2011 production. At that time, the following changes took place:

Standard Equipment Changes
Corona light rings switched to LED technology.
Roof Rails added to the xDrive50i and X5 xDrive 35i Base models.
Cargo Cover added to all models.
BMW Assist, iPod/USB Adapter and Hi-Fi Sound System added as standard to all X5 Models. (note - this is where 2012's avoid the old base audio)
Lumbar Support, Automatic Dim Mirrors, Park Distance Control, Automatic Tailgate, Ambient Lighting, Heated Seats added as standard to X5 xDrive35i Premium, X5 xDrive35i Sports Activity models.
Navigation, Lumbar Support, Automatic Dim Mirrors, Park Distance Control, Automatic Tailgate, Ambient Lighting, Heated Seats and Privacy Glass added to xDrive50i models.

Options
Leather and 3rd Row Seat will be added as stand alone options to the X5 xDrive35i Base model.

Package Changes
The Premium and Convenience Packages include Rear-view Camera, Navigation and Comfort Access.
Due to addition of Heated Front seats as standard, Cold Weather Packages include Heated Rear Seats.
The Technology Packages consist of Head-Up Display, Automatic High Beam assistant and Side-view Camera.
A new Premium Sound Package will be available on the X5 xDrive35i Premium and Sport Activity models that
include Premium Sound and Satellite Radio.
Due to the addition of Park Distance Control as standard, the price of the M Sport Package on the X5 xDrive 50i is reduced.
Adaptive Drive removed from M Sport Packages. X5 xDrive35i models, package includes Sport Suspension. On X5 xDrive50i, package includes air suspension.
