After digging around it looks like it could be a seal. I might have to clean everything up as best as I can drive the car a bit and see where exactly the oil is coming from:

This thread refers to the seals in #12: The best thread I found refers to to oil return line: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1576564 Looks like E90post is the best technical resource for these engines due to higher volume of participants for anyone looking for info in the future for their x5 35d. |

Lots of possibilities, and there is oil on a bit of everything from your fill cap on down. Personally, I would say get a good steam clean done on the engine bay, and then drive it a bit to track it down.

I tracked my turbo oil leak by adding a bottle of UV dye after cleaning the engine bay with a pressure washer (after taking precautions by taping off all the electricals of course). Then with a UV light, I found the leak coming from the charge pipe connecting to the intercooler.
https://www.autozone.com/test-scan-a...B&gclsrc=aw.ds Make sure the oil is relatively clean though. I did this initially after 7k on the oil and it was too dark for the UV dye to fluoresce. With a fresh oil change it worked like a charm. |
