Power Steering Pump Humming

My 2010 X6M seems to have this Power Steering Pump hum when I turn the wheel from resting position either left or right. This happens when the car is warms up and when is still or driven in very low speed like 3-5 mph. I brought it in to the dealer the other day and they ended up replacing the front Dynamic Drive Active Stabalizer Bar saying a seal was broken inside causing the noise. Now that I got it back, the noise seem to still be there but a bit different. My old hum seems to be coming through the steering column into the cabin and not noticeable from outside of the car. Now the hum is noticeable from outside and seem like the actual pump is humming. A bit strange. Just want to see if anyone else have any experience like this or I am just loosing my mind and the bit of Power Steering Pump feedback noise is normal for this car. I just don't remember it being this loud before. Thanks!

Mike

I had the same exact thing on my X5M. They ended up replacing the power steering pump and the noise was gone. Now about 9,000 miles later I sometimes hear it coming back a bit, but not nearly as bad. It sounds like a golf cart. But that was the fix.

Thanks for the feedback guys! You figure in this day and age, the powersteering vendor for BMW would be more reliable then this. Not new technologies here....grrrrrr. I was suspecting power steering pumpm going in for my initial service, but was very suprised they replace the Dynamic Stablizing Bar. Going back to dealer this Friday and hopefully they'll just replace it and get it done. I'll report back.

How loud is the hum you guys are talking about?

When I have my windows down, and do the same, I also hear a hum. It is not very noticeable, so I thought it was no big deal.

It was enough to where my passenger would say " what's that noise?" while I manuver into a parking space. Windows up.

You hear it more inside than outside. It is failry loud. Loud enough to be heard over the engine. It is probably the equivelent of an electric motor on a golf cart.

Actually, I am starting to suspect that the tech did not bleed the power steering circuit properly after they replaced the Dynamic Stabalizing Bar. There are micro bubble inside my power steering pump reservoir. Grrrr!!!!!!!!!!

I had same issue with humming

I had the same thing happen to me. I have a 3.5 2010 X6. Took it to dealer and they determined that power steering pump was bad. Took them 3 days to replace it (well actually 2 days, but technician damaged my radiator while installing new pump so dealer had to have new radiator shipped in).

The noise started while we are on a trip to San Diego, and I took it to dealer in Vegas the next day. Glad I did!
