X5M Wheel Options
So I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a new set of wheels. Definitely set on 22's. From what I've researched, a lot of brands are sold from different dealers, so there's not really one main hub for info or pictures. I'm welcoming everyone's advice and opinions on this...
I'm leaning towards something with a lip which I've learned really takes a monoblock type off the table, which makes me nervous about the wheel's ability to handle hard bumps. I've heard really bad stories about ADV1's customer service and quality control, but they have some of my favorite styles. Thinking about either a 10-spoke or a split 5-spoke. For a carbon black x5m, I'm thinking either silver or brushed face, with either a chrome or brushed lip (if going with a 3-piece). If someone wants to talk me out of a multi-piece wheel I'm all ears... |

Multi piece are not a draw back it can be a plus in my opinion, if you do bend or crack something it's easy enough to get a new lip or inner barrel. I hit a rut hard (going way too fast) with my car when I was running 3 piece HRE wheels, i had them repaired at a local shop and it cracked again in the same spot so I sent them back to HRE and it was 100% not a flaw in the wheel but they replaced the inner barrel for just the cost of labor. The customer service with HRE is awesome, I sent to them asking for a new inner barrel fully expecting to pay and they came back with no charge and the wheels were about 6 years old, had been taken apart and had been painted all by a third party. Any other wheel company any one of the 4 things I had would given them an easy out on the warranty.
Here are the G35 wheels I bought similar wheels for my X5 I had them on my X5M I am actually planning on getting them re-lipped with 1" larger lips all around. .

I have 22" ADV's that I love (design and look of) but of course like others have had a variety of company / customer service & product issues. If I could do it all over and had known about the first time around I would have purchased Velos Solo v from Omar @ Velos. Those are sick wheels but in a one piece wheel.

I really like the ADV design as well...but the horror stories are endless http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=875009 I certainly don't have anything against mono blocks if I found a set I liked I certainly wouldn't hesitate to get a set. Velos has a few nice sets as does HRE, I am actually considering a set of BBS mono blocks for my M and putting the 3pc HRE back on the diesel.

Okay thanks guys, so HRE is another one I'll revisit... Didn't realize how good their customer service was! Velos does seem to put out a quality mono block wheel too.
How are Morr and Strasse? I've been waiting on a viewable website (not Instagram) from Morr for over 6 months now, scratching my head on that one. |

In that link to your ADV questions you can see my super long insight on ADV.1 and some of the issues I went through (rather not go into it again as I still get worked up about it over a year later) I don't own anything from Velos (yet) but their customer service is top notch and they are always available to answer your questions. MORR does make a pretty bad ass wheel too, Kimo has them on his Blue M beauty which I believe are 22" wheels. You can see his long thread on the forum with a variety of pics, You have a lot of options which when I bought my ADV's and waited forever to get them I had a hard time finding other companies as well as pics of different sets on E70's...

OP check out the new signature series that Velos is making. I was in the same situation as you. I wanted to go bigger on the X5M because I got the brembo BBK for the X5M and they won't clear stock 20s. I ended up going with the Velos split 5 spoke signature they have launched. I figure 20say not look as mean, but it's a monoblock wheel, it will take some unsprung weight out and I can still run a non RFT high performance summer of my choosing. Once we get up into 21 and 22s there are few tire options. Pirelli makes the 22 and the only 21 is a RFT. I just wasn't willing to commit to either of those just yet.
Lets see how these wheels turn out. If the quality, finish and craftsmanship is there I may get another set of 22s just for the summer. On another note, HRE is top notch no doubt about that. You get what you pay for. I have had great success with Modulare wheels as well. Great service and quality. There person I use as my wheels provider is WheelsPerformance. The owner is Rick. Have known him for several years now and I will say he is a great middle man to buy wheels from. He is always there for the customer, gets everything out to you and has the best service I have had to date with a wheel distributor. Check out his site and give him a call. He is very knowledgable and only carries the best luxury brand wheels in the business and can help on cost as well. Its good to have someone like that in your corner when buying wheels. Something can always go wrong and he delivers a flawless relationship between the manufacturer and the customer. Tell him Andrew told you to reach out. I am confident he will help you in every category you are seeking. Rick's number is ********-7522 Wheelsperformance.com |

Thanks SouthShore and JX5M, very helpful comments. So am I correct in saying there are no runflat options in a 22?

As guys have said I'm running a set of Morr wheels on my X5M. They are 3 piece 22's. Highly polished inner barrels with clear, highly polished step lips with clear, and hand brushed with light tint gloss clear over lip faces. They call it the MS11. Feel free to check out my journal in the photo section for picks. The whole set of picks are on their flikr page as well.
Morr can do any type of configuration you can think of just like HRE. Can't go wrong with these two, but as some have said most 'luxury' brands, especially multi piece ones, are not certified whatsoever so you are taking a big risk. Not worth it in my opinion. The only brands I would ever use are ones with a well known and certified history. I'm talking BBS, Rays (Volks), Work Wheels, HRE, and newer companies such as Morr and Velos. |

Morr's are really nice; BBS Monoblock SV's in 22 look great too. I have BBS SV in 20's on my X5M but will look for pics of a friends white X5M with 22" SV's.

Chi town. 22s from vossen that are cast alloys will be the only ones that will fit the X5M. But also take into consideration the largest they go is 22x10.5. So you are losing some wheel in the rear. Could do a square set up. Now I heard they are coming out with a forged series if they haven't already. Worth looking at.

What about offsets for custom 3 piece? Seen few ADV1 users with X5Ms resorting to spacers..
I have ordered 3 pieces wheels and went with following, Front 22x10.5 ET35 (295/30/22) Rear 22x12 ET20 (335/25/22) Bare in mind I have a regular M Sport X5, not an X5M. Will be dropped on KW V3s. |

So is it safe to say monoblocks have a significantly greater resistance to pot-holes and harsh bumps compared to 3-piece, or just slightly better? I am completely on the fence still.

Monoblocks are significantly stronger. Its one of of forged metal as opposed to just the lips on 3 piece wheels. Thats why people always have problems with the barrels.

Correct to what the last poster stated. Significantly stronger, but again it depends on who makes the wheel. Seen plenty of one piece "forged" wheels from manufacturer X crack under high G cornering or load rating was not made to spec. I had asked Omar for example at Velos about a few wheels in 20 inch for my X5M and he stated to me that the size, engineering and design would not be adequate for the X5M and was not built to to accommodate in a 20 inch. In a bigger size, yes.
Just a quick recent example that I found incredibly helpful and extremely appreciative and honest from his end. As an end result he got my $$! |
