After how many miles is typical alternator replacement?

Mine is 92,000 miles

Last week the X5 died on the freeway and left my wife stranded (and very upset and guess who gets that taken out on )

Shop says battery was completely dead. The battery is only 8 months old. Now prior to this for the past 2 years, I've been getting intermittent 4x4/DSC/ParkingBrake malfunctions about once every 4-6 weeks. Prior to THAT, I had water in the battery compartment due to a broken seal that fried some stuff. Were the malfunctions a telltale sign the alternator was going bad? Did the water incident shorten the alternator's life? I'm hoping so because this alternator replacement is setting me back $1400 and I can't afford any more gremlins.

Mine died at about 85,000 miles.... on a Monday morning during rush hour on the single lane HOV lane (barricades on both sides so theres no way to go around my stuck vehicle) heading into Manhattan... traffic was backed up for miles/hours and reports of "major vehicle breakdown" was apparently on the news... needless to say people wanted to kill me lol, Prior to this happening I didnt get much of any warning maybe had 1 or 2 "high battery discharge warning over a 5-6 month period but no idea that anything was seriously wrong

At 123k miles and never has had an issue with the alternator.

Makes me wonder if I should replace it just because.

I don't think you should. There is a saying, don't fix what isn't broken.

Ya once it dies, you'll make it all the way to me...o...wait...

Its 2017, if you wait more then 5 hours to be towed, your doing something wrong.

Who remembers a time before cell phones? I don't, but I have broken down a few times without one, man o man, thats tricky.

The alt in my 4.8 went out at 75k. My wife was driving when it died in the middle of SeaTac parking garage blocking traffic causing quite a scene. It was a mess and she was pissed. She was flying to meet me, missed 2 flights and got to SFO after midnight instead of 7 p.m
