Am I Crazy For Considering Trading In The X5d for...

a 2015.5 limited edition Black Sapphire Volvo Polestar V60????

I'm a diehard BMW Fanboy (we just returned from doing our 2nd ED for an M4). But I really don't need the size of an SUV for our 1 German Shepherd and the few runs to Depot. I really like European sport-orientated wagons, but car manufactures don't see a demand here in the States. The BMW wagon and Audi allroad, just don't provide the "performance" I'm looking for. I've never really considered Volvo, and this thing isn't cheap $61900!!! But I'm sort of attracted to the exclusivity (1:80) and performance-oriented options on this car (20" Michelin PSS, Brembo 6 Piston brakes, Ohlins shock absorbers, aero kit, full-flow exhaust). However, as crazy as it sounds, I feel a bit guilty considering a brand other than BMW--I told you I drink the Kool-Aid. It's just unfortunate our wagon selections are so limited here. I would love an Audi RS4 Avant, but this Volvo seems as close as it's going to get.

My wife has had both an S60 and XC90 so I can't say that I mind Volvo all that much - but last I heard Volvo's 'AWD' split is something along the lines of 95:5 (front:rear), and can go up to 50:50 depending on slippage.

Conversely, the X5 will start at a 40:60 ratio, and adjust from there.

That alone would be a deal breaker for me personally.

Garage List
2013 BMW M3  [10.00]
2015 BMW M4  [0.00]
2013 BMW F30  [0.00]
2014 BMW F22  [0.00]
2013 BMW F06  [0.00]
Hmm interesting.. just doing a quick google search it looks like a pretty cool car. I think the exclusivity alone make its a little bit more desirable than the X5D

I believe Polestar has tuned the split differently: "Haldex four-wheel-drive system will send 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels."

Any problems with your Volvos?

Hmm good to know. I just found the same article, but noticed that only happens 'With launch control enabled...'. I wonder how the power is split under normal driving?

Do they have these in showrooms, or are they a pre-order only kind of thing? Maybe driving a regular T6 would give you an idea of what to expect?

Anyways - the reliability was great on both our Volvos - we actually still own the XC90, as my wife can't find anything she likes better to replace it with.

Yeah, my wife and I drove a V60 R-Design this morning. It was surprising quick and handled relatively well. Again, this would be her car and I'm just patently waiting for my M4 redelivery!

Yeah, these will not be in showrooms. And no demo to test drive which also concerns me (I didn't test drive the M4 either, but I am obviously familiar with the brand). In order to get one, you place a deposit, submit an order, and if the one of two colors you want is available (Black or Blue) at the port, the car is yours.

Glad to hear you/wife are happy with the Volvos. It's not like BMWs are known to be problem-free either. I'm waiting to hear back from the dealer. I asked for $500 more on my trade and the pet cargo mat in order to strike the deal

I'd say go for it then!

These are absolute beasts. I would not think that's crazy at all. I'm actually a big Volvo fan myself and grew up in them. I had an S80 myself and it was the most comfortable long-haul vehicle I've had.

My wife dismissed Volvos her entire life until her girlfriend got an S60. Now she wants to "take a look"...

According to Speedmonkey:
The Haldex four wheel drive system has been calibrated for more rearward bias. How much? It's naturally 50:50 but 100% can be sent to the rear wheels (or front) if necessary.

328d Wagon....the perfect utilitarian companion to the M4.
It will never be as fast as that Volvo. But it will be balanced better, better fuel economy....and with some nice wheels and a decent coilover kit....it will handle better and look better.

I guess the Volvo dealer was watching this Thread, b/c he just emailed me and is willing to give me another $500 on my X5d. So I went for it and put down a DEPOSIT!!!

I'm a bit nervous, but EXCITED, as this will be my first Volvo and first car brand other than a BMW in the past 11yrs--YIKES!!! Please don't let me regret this (i.e., reliability, size, service, etc...) Again, if only BMW (or others, like Audi) would bring over sport-oriented wagons, I would have more options. But the majority of Americans for some reason are turned off by wagons.

Now, anybody find a good deal on these pants??? I'm sure they will go well with my M4 and P*

Traitor. Have fun in your Swedish safety cell on your way to pack it full with IKEA boxes.

Agreed 100%
The F10550d wagon, the RS6 wagon, the e63 wagon ...are all cars I would have in my stable if they were available here. Add the 1 series 4 door wagon diesel to that list = drove it in Europe = Awesome performance with 42 mpg.

It's not the American public that does not want these .....it's the bean counters behind on the proper marketing for these. They have to come up with a semi-clever "super sport cross utility" segment, so nobody happens to notice... it's a wagon. Cadillac has one.
I think it's the actual title "wagon" that freaks buyers and marketers out.
Otherwise, the X5M would not have been successful. At its lowered stance it's basically a wagon.

We still have the CTS V wagon, and its available with a 6 spd manual. Its probably the only GM I would consider as a family hauler (emphasis on the hauler!)
