I have read many threads of you others having had the reduced power engine malfunction on your M's. Well I was hoping I wouldn't have to experience this but I too did this morning. I started the car no excessive turnover or lag starting. Pulled out of garage and within minutes at the first stop sign my X5M was idling super rough for the first time having it for the last year. Continued to do so till I got to my first destination and shut her down. After a re start immediate rough idle again followed by the CEL and the engine malfunction and reduced power message. I shut it down before pulling off restarted and shut it down again and one more re start and pulled away with no CEL light and back to normal idle. Any others that have experienced this in similar fashion where the light went away as well as the rough idle?

Ive had this frequently which sucks. From what ive read it can be numerous problems.

How many miles do you have on your truck? How much gas was in your tank when your started it?

Ive noticed if i have a low tank this can happen and have heard other that had the same issue. Could be a sign you need new spark plugs and injectors. Also my tech told me moisture could have just gotten in there and it will be fine after running a bit.

pull the codes and see what they are - the codes don't lie. You can get them read at any autozone if you don't have a reader.

So if the CEL is not on anymore the codes can still be read by autozone?

So why reprogram the car if bmw is reading the fault code with their high tech stuff wouldn't they just fix the issue or replace the faulty injectors or as a whole?

Yes, but my SA says some clear automatically after 30 days if they don't recur. Not sure if that's true or not.

Codes do not go away automatically. They are there until cleared. The light can go off if it is a small issue and the DME thinks the issue has been rectified.... ex a lose gas cap

You prob need new injectors? Have they ever been replaced before? When was the car manufactured?

Somewhere there is a way to induce a cel if it is your injectors. I think by driving in sport mode and downshifting to make it run hard at high rpms. The bad injectors can't feed enough fuel and it will throw the CEL. I would want to take it in with the CEL showing.

Interesting point! Yeah still nothing driving normal mpg still 16.5, drives hard is M mode even when shifting. Don't want to waste my time at dealer because of no CEL. I'll give it another week and see.

Did you check for codes at autozone?

Auto zone cannot read anything if there is no current CEL on the vehicle. Just left there.

What you can do to reliably induce misfire codes is pull the acoustic cover off while the engine is running. And look on both banks for the coils that sit on top of the spark plugs. They are circled in yellow in the pic below. PhotoCred to BES335xi from n54 injector swap diy. You can lift up on the locking tab on the side where you see the wires going into the coil and this will stop the spark plugs from firing in that particular cylinder giving you misfire codes AKA replace injector codes. Do this while the engine is running 1 at a time on as many cylinders as you can. You will have enough codes to get all injectors replaced.

it is too late that i found this trick to surprise the dealer

the problem came after the warranty was over

so there is no forum member pay on their own, to replacing the fuel injectors?

I just had my 2012 X5 50 in. Took them 10 days to replace 3 injectors, dump all fuel due to to high of ethanol content (15%), and then replace all spark plugs when it still threw codes. This was at 39k miles and the kicker is all injectors we're replaced at 31k miles.

Go to a independent German Repair Shop that has a BMW scan Tool(Autologic).if you have not cleared the code with a scanner then it is still in the backround even though your CEL is OFF.if you have done your spark plugs then i would not doubt it if one of your coils might be giving up on you.
