X5M Powered Rear Hatch
The powered rear hatch on my 2012 X5M occasionally malfunctions.
Sometimes it will stop after opening about halfway, sometimes the rear switch won't open the hatch, necessitating using the inside switch, and sometimes neither the outside, nor the inside switches will open the hatch. Usually the switch on the hatch will allow me to close it, but once or twice I've had to use the inside switch to close the hatch. The dealer ran a diagnostic on the hatch but came up with no fault codes. Has anyone had a similar experience? |

Thanks, mswaz. I thought the lower tailgate might be part of the problem and have been making sure I close it firmly. The problem still occurs intermittently. We'll see if it goes away in time.
The only other X5M I've seen around here was a couple of weeks ago up at Newcastle Golf Course (Safire Black with dark windows), was that you? Cheers |

My girlfriend just bought an 09 X5 and said she was having the same problem. it opens but wouldn't close with any of the buttons. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but is this common on these cars? Any known fixes?
Also stupid question but since i haven't had a chance to even play with the car yet is it ok to manually shut the tail gate? Or is there some release that needs to be triggered to decouple it from the power motor?...or just drive with the "air brake" deployed? i want to make sure she doesnt get stuck OR break the damn thing... Thanks for the input.

Yeah, it's ok to close the hatch by hand and it doesn't hurt anything so far as I can see.
The dealer surmised that the problem with my hatch may in part be due to the rubber seal on the upper door sticking to the surface of the lower gate. He coated the seal with glycerin and it seemed to have helped. |

Any solutions
I have had my x5M for a little over a month and while on vacation had problems with my rear hatch not wanting to open on multiple occasions. Oddly, what seemed to work was putting it into gear and driving it 10 feet, putting it I. Park then it would open.
Did any of you find a solution? |

No change with mine.
Opening the rear hatch using the exterior switch works 95% of the time. Otherwise, I have to use the interior switch. Very few, if any, problems, closing the hatch with the rear mounted switch. The interior switch only opens the hatch although I understand you may be able to recode it. |

My hatch will NOT close with the red button inside the hatch. It has to be manually closed
after reading about it online, it seems it is a problem that dealer could never verify. I just live with it, not worth the effort to have to go to my dealer, leave it for the day and then pick it back up the next day. Just to hear they did not find an issue.

I have found that when using the FOB you can only touch the open button for a split second or it will never open and only sets off the alarm. Also, have also found that on occasion I cannot open the rear hatch by touching the handle. I have to play around witt the unlock button first or go inside and use the push button under the radio. BMW has a real problem here and needs to step up and acknowledge the problem. I am not letting them off the hook and do not care if I take it back 100 times.

Thanks everyone. It is hard to believe a car that carries the price these do would have such a simple problem go unresolved. It isn't like a rear hatch is cutting edge technology.

My Rear hatch ( 2013 X5 35i ) has the same problem about 10% of the time It doesn't want to open... I have a annual oil change coming up next week and will bring this up to the service adviser and see what he does.

I am experiencing a problem with the rear hatch malfunctioning. The hatch will sometimes go up half way or not at all....then when I press the hatch close button, it will go down a couple inches at a time. I have been to the dealer three times now. First time could not replicate even though I showed the dealer the malfunction when I dropped it off for service. Second time also could not replicate, showed the dealer (and tech) the malfunction when I picked up. Both time no error codes. Third time they claimed they found an error code and replaced the left strut. Worked for 1 day. Getting frustrated and hoping someone on this post has encountered and found then problem. Note: I have been playing with the bottom gate to make sure closed all the way. When bottom gate is not closed the hatch won't move at all. Mine closes couple inches at a time and stops.
Thanks, Nick |

Mine does the same thing. I don't bother opening it with the key fob. I sometimes cannot close it using the red button when it's open, and sometimes it doesn't want to open when I hit the button by the license plate.
Inside though, usually always works. I essentially have a few choices to open and close the thing, and one of them always works! |

No problems with mine at all. My car is also coded, so I can remote open/close the tailgate as well as use the button on the dash to open/close the tailgate.
