Difference between 2011 and 2012 models

Hi, sorry for the noob question, but I'm looking for a preowned X5d and haven't been able to find anything on the forums that shows the differences between 2011 and 2012 models.

Coming from the E9X M3 world, I'm aware perhaps some options were bundled together, and maybe features were added to the Navigation like BMW apps...

I'm also aware of that the LED halos were implemented in 2012, but are there any other differences?

For the most part it was LED halos and equipment/package configurations. Note that some 2011 X35d's (late 2011 builds) did come with the LED halos. If the build date is 4/11 or later it should have the LED's. Starting 4/11 the gas models were all 2012 model years, but 2011 model year diesels were built into the summer of 2011.

Check this link for specific equipment and package changes for 2012. There's a specific section for the X35d just below the 35i & 50i, though I think a lot of the changes were the same regardless of engine.

awesome, thanks so much for this info.

Aside from the shifting of options into those packages, it appears there's no substantive new item for the 2012's other than the LED halos for 4/11+ builds?

Also, for the 3rd row option, what was package did it use to be part of? This announcement simply mentions 3rd row seating was now a standalone option.

The change to the n55 35i Engine and 8 speed transmission and upgraded CIC are the important part.

What's under the hood is more important than the halos!

Correct, just what's mentioned in the link.

The 3rd row option has always been a standalone option - it's never been part of any package. The link just mentions it's now available on the Base model 35i…apparently prior to 2012 models you needed at least the Premium model 35i in order to add this option.

Flying Ace is asking about 2011 to 2012 changes, not 2010 to 2011. As well he's also asking about the diesel, which doesn't have the N55.

Between the 2 model years I'd definitely get a 2012. The LED coronas are a more current/modern look, but more than that it's a year newer.

I can see how 2011's are a desirable choice right now due to a lower price than a 2012 - I believe much of this is due to the fact very few 2011's will have a warranty left at this point. Price drops quite a bit once the warranty expires.

yeah, 2011s are about $10k less in price right now, for the exact same mileage. 2011's are all rolling off warranty in 2015, unless I buy a CPO, which will roll off in 2017 instead.

so I'm starting to see that some 2011 models (non-cpo), with about 35k miles are pricing at mid to high $30k range...pretty good price IMO.

Now if only I can find one with the options I want and that's not in Chicago...
