BMW X6 M First Drive

The guys over at Jalopnik have gotten behind the wheel of the BMW X6 M for the first time and it sounds like they were very impressed with the car so far. They promise to have a full review up in the next few days but for now you can read and see the teaser photos at Jalopnik

Quote:

Despite the enormous size and weight, the BMW X6 M is just as fast around the Nurburgring as the last BMW M3. But why did BMW's M division build the world's sportiest crossover?

...

Let's get back to my initial question of why BMW's M division built the X6 M by repeating what a German engineer said to the group of assembled journalists today when asked to describe the X6 M in one sentence. His response was "the X6 M is the ideal car to pick up your spirits in this day and age of a world in crisis." All I know is this $90,000-plus toy certainly brought a smile to my face and picked up my spirits. So in that, it's done its high-priced job.
Make sure to read more over at Jalopnik

This may just be the most perfect car ever.

* Big and roomy
* Really freaking fast, and without dipping into the V10 or V12 range of engines that produce similar horsepower
* Looks cool (subjectively, of course!)
* Super practical
* Super safe (go watch their rollover testing videos. They had to design a mechanical system to force it roll over because they had trouble getting to do it on at extreme angles due to how damn well it's built!)
* HANDLES!

Sounds promising, but I think I'll like the X5M more

Yes when I think "practical" I think of a $90,000+ car, your right

It looks/sounds interesting. For that price why didn't they just make an uber M3

I don't really think it's super practical. It can only seat 4 right? And the head room in the back is atrocious for a car that big. Amazing piece of engineering though ...

Definitely needs to be debadged. The lettering almost stretches out to the roundel. Well, not really but you get my point. At least it's a better, shorter name than "X6 xDrive35i" (8 syllables, really?)

X5 M will be the ideal car for practicality. Just like the E90 M3!

It is relatively practical for a good handling sports coupe with decent ground clearance and visibility where no more than 4 people are need to be lugged around.

The rear room isn't too bad considering it's a coupe - not had any complaints from people in the back of my x6, they've all praised it for how comfortable it is.

Horses for courses.

the x6 M sounds like a very interesting all-in-one car - but being as fast around the ring as the decade old 200bhp down e46 m3? not the best selling point in the world.

Didn't know that. I figured it seated five because of its size on the outside.

the 2 rear seats are side bolstered and have a large armrest between them - like in the 7 series. the x6 is very much a niche car, it wasn't designed to be an everyman chariot like the x5. if you don't need to carry 3 people in the rear, there's no need to compromise on the comfort of the 2 that you do.

"don't really think it's super practical..." your missing the point it wasn't suppose to be practical , if you want haul around kids and lots of stuff you get an x5. This car was designed as a niche car to appeal to a particular group (not soccer moms) and priced that way.
