X5M just threw a code...

P0156- Oxygen sensor Bank 2

Yeah, not thrilled about this, seeing as how I'm away from home for another 45 days and my wife is left to deal with this on her own. Our X5 has about 33k miles on it, a 2010, and she just called me about this code this morning. I looked into sensors, and they are about $310 for the pre-cat and $390 for the post-cat at my local dealer. Less of course with my CCA discount, but I forgot to ask about that. My question is, does anyone have any experience with this, and is there a way to tell if its the pre-cat or post-cat sensor? All she did was run over to the local parts store and get a free scan. Now I at least feel comfortable letting her drive it (albeit at even lower gas mileage!).

Anyway, any experiences or perhaps costs to repair would be really helpful. It appears the sensors are all up top near the turbos (in the downpipes) so hopefully they aren't terribly hard to swap. I've swapped O2 sensors many times before, but the E70 platform is still really new to us...

Thanks for the help folks.

This is an emission related part ... check your Owners Manual and warranty, but I believe that Federal Law requires coverage for 100K mi ... (your are in the US?)

Actually, I the other day I was just told something to this effect as well. That is great news, and yes, I'm in the US, Florida to be exact. Thanks for the info, I have to look into that soon.

Bringing this post back to life as I never resolved. I looked into all the emissions laws that I could find and nothing that would've allowed me to get this taken care of. I was originally told the code was for Bank 2, but after looking at some links for OBD DTC trouble codes, I see P0156 only states "Oxygen Sensor Circuit"

I'm confused. Need to get my coding cable and software dialed in so that I can look at this stuff myself! To be continued...

I have a 4.8i had same code about 2 months ago, was the post cats oxygen sensor , purchased the universal oxygen sensor by bosh at advance auto for $68 bucks , only difference with specific one is you have to split wires vs plug and play . To be honest it was quite Simple as instructions and diagram are included . Hope this helps.

Thanks. How did you know it was the post cat O2 sensor and not the precast? I bought the pre-cat one because the parts guy at the dealer was saying that they've never had to order the post cat, but they typically keep the pre-cat in stock, makes me think this might be a common failure.

Bank 2 oxygen sensors monitors cats, so is postcats.

Bank 1 monitors manyfold, sensor placement is pre-cat

Makes sense ?

Hmm, I would've thought Bank 2 would be right bank, and Bank 1 would be left bank... That's typically how they're referred to in most cars?

Do you have any documentation that shows this? Not that I don't trust you, I'd just like to verify before installing this O2 sensor that I might not need!

Thanks in advance!

Sorry I don't , that's what work for me . But if dealer is telling you different . Proceed with what makes you feel more comfortable .
