Pre-auction sale: 2012 X5 35i m-sport, black on black with high miles ~ 78K.

Saw this at my local dealer: they took a one owner, 2012 X5 35i m-sport, black on black in trade with high miles ~ 78K.

Told me that because of the high mileage, they wouldn't try to sell it on the lot because they couldn't put a BMW warranty on it. It's not advertised, but the GM told me that he'd entertain offers around the 30'ish mark to avoid having to bring it to auction ...

Details:
- one owner
- all service records (see attached)
- no open recalls
- 2012 Xdrive 35i m-sport with style 333 wheels, aluminum trim, no HUD. multi-contour seats
- note that it has “option 840 lncreased top speed limiter". No sure what that means.
- is also has an extra 2 yr MP plan, so full service through 3/31/2018!
- It looks like it needs 4 new tires and the windshield has a chip. Brakes were done 10K mi ago.

Around the $30K mark? That's a good price for an 2012 M Sport with a few nice options. I'd take the money saved vs. buying one with warranty, and just paying for work that needs to be done out of out pocket by your favorite indy.

Just makes me wonder what the original owner was offered as far as trade in was concerned. If he's willing to sell it around the $30K mark, it'll probably sell for $28K to $29K. That means the poor sod who traded it in probably only received $27K for it...

So they put a 2-year MP on it, but no extended warranty. Interesting. If you drive few miles annually (like me), it could work out in 3-4 years when the mileage catches up with the year to be competitive in the market when it's time to sell. A higher mileage 3.5i shouldn't be murder out of pocket for expenses vs. a 5.0 with similar mileage. That's one theory, at least.

I did the same thing with my X5. Bough it CPO with 40K miles, but drive on average less than 6K miles per year. I'll keep it until the CPO runs out, at which point it should actually be considered "low mileage" again.

I'm curious to know how others feel about the 3.5i's prospects for reliability out-of-warranty. Obviously, there's more "stuff" to go wrong on the 5.0 (and I've read many complaints on here about them), but I'm hoping to hear positive overall experiences about the 3.5i. However, the LCIs (namely the 8-A and turbo) may be too new to gauge out-of-warranty just yet. Also, many on this forum appear to be CPO, extending beyond the manufacturer warranty. I'm not one of them. So far, so good (only one month after expiry)...

That was my thinking also ... until I looked at the what these went for at Manheim auctions over the past 60 days or so: ALL sold for between $24K and $25K, regardless of engine or options and with mileage over 70K ...

I'm being told that these high mileage cars sell to exporters. They have ways to modify the mileage on them (and not subject to odometer tampering). Overseas these sell for 50% to 100% MORE than what they cost at auction!

I think that this dealer is willing to sell around $27K ..., but don't know, I haven't tried.

Funny you say that. About 2 years ago I was presented with an '11 35i M Sport. Had a hit on Carfax, but I wanted to see it anyways. Passed on it, as it was trashed. Once I told the guys I was not interested, I asked them how much they bought it for at auction. The miles were in the high 30s, and they paid mid 30s for it. For the hell of it, I ran the VIN again yesterday. Looks like it was purchased by a dealership that specializes in the export of these cars. And guess where this one went? Russia...

There's a recent article in Jalopnik about exporting new high end SUVs to newer high wealth countries (such as China) through brokers due to extreme taxes/tariffs on new cars. Dealers have even begun "interrogating" new car buyers here to prevent it, including the requirement of a "non-export" agreement (which only holds water if you get caught and try to buy new from the manufacturer again). While the article applies primarily to new cars, there's got to be a huge market for used, too. I wonder how much our low-mileage X5s are worth to some brokers...Interesting...If my 2011 X5 3.5i, 48k miles, SA pkg, etc. is worth, let's say, $75k in China, and I could get $45k for it right now from a broker, I'd do it in a heartbeat. What about you blokes?
