Question 2010 BMW X5 xDrive48i (Reliable??)

New to the BMW family when I recently got my 2013 X1. Loving it.

Wife now considering trading in her 2014 Mercedes GLK250 (Diesel) so we can increase towing and a nicer car...

Looking at a used 2010 BMW X5 xDrive48i with 70K mikes; seems loaded but expensive at $24K.

Seeing lots of info on the forums on reliability with the V8s. Don't need a headache.

Opinions -- pursue or run away?

Thanks,
Martin in NH

Price is way too high for a 2010 with 70k. I just bought a fully loaded 2013 with 49k for similar money. If you are looking to tow, the 35d and 50i are great possibilities. Plus you can get a LCI model, which has some updates over the non-LCI's.

Totally I also got a 2012 loaded for 13k from the dealer but that's because I got it for what they paid for it in trade and it was 100k miles.

The deals are out their.

Run away from the 4.8i. If you want the power, there are plenty of CPO 50i models in the $$mid-30s. Also, you can get similar power & torque from a tuned N55, which is probably the most reliable engine in the x5 family.

So, I'll say I've owned a 4.8i. It's a fine engine, sounds good and has a nice power band. It suffers from valve stem seal failures, alternator bracket oil leaks, and valley pan coolant pipe failures. All can be expensive to fix, all are pretty common on older 4.8i

The 5.0, has injector failures, timing chain failures, eats batteries, valve stems crap out, cooling line leaks, etc. I have a version of this engine in my x5m, and so far it's been fine. Though it's had all of its injectors replaced and it's turbo, cooling lines and it only has 42k miles. Basically the n63 has all of the 4.8i problems plus new ones.

The diesels, have tones of emissions failures, cbu, vibration dampers, etc.

I've owned all of the above. So what I'll say is be ware of the problem areas and their aftermarket fixes. By the lowest mileage example you can find and a warranty if possible, I liked my 4.8i but wanted more power

The gasoline 6 is probably the least expensive option, and most reliable. It has similar power to the 4.8i and somewhat better fuel economy. It also has lower resale value and can be found more cheaply. But it's hard to find loaded with options. The v8s generally are better equipped.

If there's anything I've learned when it comes to BMW ownership, it's that BMW really hasn't figured out how to make reliable V8s or V10s. Great to drive and intoxicating power but you'll really need to ask yourself, truthfully, if youll even really use it. At first I was set on a 50i yet ended up with a 35d and have zero regrets.

I will echo the recommendation of the 35i. Seems to be the most reliable across the board on the E70 platform and has decent power.

I recently bought a 2010 X5 48i with 80k on the clock for $18k. Also purchased an extended warranty for 3 yrs 36k/miles. I have no regrets and no issues thus far. It was tough getting rid of my E39 M5 for it, but it hasn't let me down yet and I love it as my daily driver.

I have an 07 4.8 that has been good as far as engine and I've put 50k on it since I've owned it with 124k on the clock. Damn A/C is what's out now.. I put about 18k a year on my car so I plan on trading soon, but if I were you, I'd go 2011 or newer. I'm looking at 12 and 13 M sports if I can ever find one at a good price and mileage with cold weather and premium sound.

Paid 34k for a 2012 X5M with 54k and CPO Warranty remaining. Your pricing is definitely off.

I'd look for an LCI Model, (2011+) as well. The 50i's have their share of problems, so maybe a 35d makes most sense for you

FWIW - I picked up a '12 35i with 85k miles for $18k from a dealer six months ago. Fully loaded, LCI, OE 20" wheels, sport package, cold weather, etc.

Keep searching. And as other's have echoed, you may want to stay away from the 48i. All it takes is a quick google search to read up some nightmarish reviews on that power plant.
