BMW X5 e70
need help locating boost pressure sensor. code is p0242. code randomly appeared today while driving. car drives fine just after 5k rpm car goes into limp mode and when i turn the car on and off it goes back to fine but if i go over 5 k same thing happens. Has anyone had this kind of problem?

So the problem is the code is a generic code and with 4 sensors to choose from, you need to narrow it down to which one. You will need to use a laptop loaded with ISTA to test all of the sensors. A scan tool like the foxwell 510 loaded with BMW software might be able to do it also but I am not 100% certain.
I would assume its one of the sensors are the lower intakes, which are pretty difficult to get to, especially the drivers side. I have found removing the tire and pulling off the front inner fender well makes it much easier to access. As I mentioned before though, you need to run some tests as it could be a wiring issue to and not the sensor itself. Load ISTA on a laptop or if you have the cash, just buy a laptop off Ebay with it already loaded and the D-CAN cable. ISTA is not very intuitive but is incredibly powerful and a must for every do-it-yourselfer. |
